Breaking Ground, the magazine of the Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities, is preparing for its annual arts issue.

This special publication will feature artwork, poetry and prose, and articles related to the arts and disability.

The deadline for submissions is June 15th.

We will consider:

photos and all other forms of artwork
poetry, fiction and creative personal essays, up to 1,000 words

We are also seeking full-length (max 850 words) articles on unique arts programming throughout the state. If you are involved with, or aware of any arts programming (i.e. fine arts, dance, theater, etc.), please contact me before submitting the article. We are especially interested in arts programming that involves persons with and without disabilities!

Content is devoted to work by or about persons with disabilities.

We will give accepted contributors a prominent by-line, a biographical note and copies of the arts issue.

All submissions must be accompanied by complete contact information, and a two-or three-sentence bio of the artist/writer.

Every month, Pepsi awards grants through the Refresh Project for ideas that will have a positive impact– and you get to vote for the great ideas that mean the most to you.

In May, the Autism Society is eligible for a grant to expand our free nationwide support line (currently open 8 hours each weekday), to offer confidential, one-to-one contact with a live specialist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

When a diagnosis is made, parents and family members often wonder what to do next. Even where valuable treatments and support services exist, families must negotiate a maze of agencies and providers in search of support appropriate to their individual needs—a process that consumes time and energy already in short supply for families affected by autism. Parents, individuals on the spectrum, and professionals often want to talk to a skilled professional about their situation, and many times cannot or do not know who to call.

The Autism Society already provides this line of support to many families and individuals, but with the help of this grant, we can expand our contact center to make trained professionals available at any hour of the day or night, and provide more training and support to Autism Society chapters to improve their local outreach efforts.

The grant is given to ideas that get the highest number of votes for each funding level in a one month period, so we need you to log on and vote every single day in the month of May. Nashville Symphony presents free outdoor concert Friday

This coming Friday at 8 p.m. in front of the Metro Courthouse, Public Square, the Nashville Symphony will present a free outdoor live concert featuring Christopher Cross. Familiar music both classical and popular — pieces by Aaron Copland, Tchaikovsky and others — will be presented in the first half; Cross will perform some of his favorite hits (he's known for songs including “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” “Sailing” and “Ride Like the Wind”) during the second half.

Cross was initially scheduled to perform as part of the Bank of America Pops Series on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (May 6–8) in the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, before that building suffered damage as downtown Nashville flooded on Monday.

“We realize that people have lost their lives in this flooding. Some have lost their homes and others have had their belongings swept away and we wanted to give something back to the community," said Alan Bostick, senior director of communications at the Schermerhorn. "Music is what we do so we’ve pulled together this concert to help Nashville begin the healing process.”

At the Schermerhorn, crews have been able to begin pumping water out of the basement over the past 24 hours, but they’ve had to stop for the moment because the water levels outside were so high that the water had nowhere to go.

"We still have about 18 feet in the basement," Bostick said. "Once we’re able to pump again, we’ve been told that we should be able to get much of the water out of the basement within 48 hours. Only then can we enter the basement to take stock of the damage there."

Bostick said that new locations for most of the events on the Schermerhorn's May concert schedule have been found; details on those events are to come.

eXceptional Orchestra performs at World’s Fair Park during an afternoon of children’s activities

Join remote control boat enthusiasts, musicians Georgi Schmitt, George Reynolds, Sean McCollough and the 2010 eXceptional Orchestra that includes members of the Tennessee Children's Dance Ensemble and the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, for ETTAC's HeartSong Festival of the Arts at the Tennessee Amphitheater on the World's Fair Park, on Sunday afternoon, May 23rd, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public and is for all children with and without disabilities, their families and friends. SUMNER COUNTY TEENS REPRESENT TENNESSEE TO THE WORLD

In June, the teen jazz/pop trio Lake Rise Place which is based in Gallatin,
will represent the State of Tennessee to the world by performing at the Smithsonian
Museum of Art for the VSA International Festival in Washington, DC. Members of Lake
Rise Place are: Christian Kissinger (drummer and founder of the group) who lives in
Gallatin and is a Freshman at Merrol Hyde Magnet School; Caleb Shown (bass player)
who lives in Hendersonville and is also a Freshman at Merrol Hyde Magnet School and
Elliott McClain (keyboard player/vocalist) who lives in Mt Juliet and attends the
Tennessee School for the Blind.

This prestigious festival has taken place every four years since the 1970’s, but this is the
first time any performer has been selected from Tennessee to participate in this event. In
addition, only 28 acts were selected this year from submissions in dance, theater and
music from all over the globe. VSA will bring together artists, educators, researchers and
policymakers from around the world.

VSA Tennessee Director, Lori Kissinger, stated “This is a huge accomplishment for VSA
Tennessee, the State of Tennessee and these young men. We have sent in numerous
submissions hoping that one day we could get Tennessee represented. When you
consider that this festival will have performers such as Patti LaBelle, the National
Symphony Orchestra and Diane Schuur, we are extremely honored to be in such
company.”

As a send off concert, Lake Rise Place will be the featured performing group on Monday,
May 24th at 7pm at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Besides Lake Rise Place, other
performers will also take the stage to include 2010 VSA Tennessee Young Soloist
Amanda Stevens who sings Opera, Nick Sharp who has opened for Billy Ray Cyrus and
who performs country guitar and vocals, Brian Werner from Crossville who sings
musical theater, Cages Bend a new blues band, the VSA/Blair Dulcimer Choir
performing traditional folk tunes and the Tennessee School for the Blind Choral
Ensemble and Jazz ensemble.

Several Awards will be presented that evening as well, such as the Teacher of the
Year to Patty Daniels of Beech High School, Young Artist to Jalyn Weston of
Sweetwater, Art Supporter to Lisa Hester of the Tennessee Arts Commission and
Corporate Partner to CVS/Caremark.

Tickets for the event are $10, children 13 and younger are free, and can be purchased by
calling 248-5878 or 1-800-835-7077. However, a donor has made it possible for people
with disabilities and their families to attend for free. Just call the number mentioned and
state that you want to take advantage of the free tickets.

Bellevue family of four displaced from flood needs temporary housing where their young son with Down syndrome will be safe from wandering (single story, fenced yard).

Kids are in Harpeth Valley Elementary and Bellevue Middle School. Home being repaired/rebuilt is in River Plantation. Family very much wants to find a place close to these schools and River Plantation.

Nashville, Tennessee (May 2, 2010) - As tens of thousands in Middle
Tennessee are displaced during this sudden flooding and tornado
disaster, Brown Dog Foundation is stepping up to the request to
provide assistance to families directly affected by the disaster and
whose pet is injured as a result. The Disaster Relief Program offers
to pay for stabilization of injuries and/or treatment. During
recognized disasters, the organization waives the normal guideline
requirements. Families are only asked to provide proof that they have
been affected by the disaster (a statement from Red Cross or TEMA will
suffice) and prove that the pet belongs to them.

Specifically, from May 2 until June 2, we will provide funding for the
following situations: treatment of injuries sustained in the
disaster, treatment of illness caused by exposure to contaminated
water and replacement of necessary medications that were lost in the
flood.

After June 2, the funds will be made available to families directly
affected by the flood whose pet needs critical care to keep them
alive. Whether medications to treat chronic illness or immediate
treatment for a life-threatening condition or illness, Brown Dog
Foundation will help families who are affected long-term by this
disaster. Normal qualification standards apply for these grants.

Because Brown Dog Foundation operates solely by donations of the
general public, we are also encouraging cash contributions - 100% of
these funds will be directed to aid in this disaster only. Donations
are accepted online or by mailing a check to Brown Dog Foundation, c/o

Brown Dog Foundation, 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in October, 2006,
offers assistance to families in temporary financial crisis an
alternative to euthanizing their family pet when life-saving treatment
or life-sustaining medication is necessary. Brown Dog Foundation,
Inc. serves the entire state of TN, with a sizable concentration of
assistance occurring in Middle Tennessee communities. The
organization helps families who have experienced an unexpected
catastrophe (job loss, unexpected and major medical bills, etc.) at
the same time that their pet requires life-saving treatment or life-
sustaining medications. The goal is to help these families, who don't
qualify for public or government assistance in any other aspect of
their lives the ability to use their limited resources to focus on
what they need to do to get their life back together. Brown Dog
Foundation pays 75% of the cost of the veterinary care or medication
needed and the family pays 25%.

Founded by Carol A. Smock and six other women, the organization was
started from nothing and has grown into a thriving community program.
With more than 1000 donors and an average of 50 volunteers, the
organization spends its time raising money so when a family needs
help, they can respond. "We've helped 83 families across the country,
seventy of which live in Tennessee, with the cost of prescription
medications, acute and chronic treatments and surgeries- anything that
ensures the pet will enjoy a good quality of life. In each
circumstance, we've given the family the peace of mind they need to
focus on what's most important in their life - getting through their
crisis," explains Smock. "We love to help dogs and cats, but the true
reward comes when we get a call from the family telling us that their
lives and finances are back on track because of the generosity of our
donors!"

Wednesday, Governor Phil Bredesen announced the Elevate America program, a partnership between Tennessee and Microsoft. This program is an innovative public-private partnership to provide free technology training to citizens across the state. Through Elevate America, Microsoft will work with the Tennessee Department of Labor to distribute 25,875 vouchers for free, online technology training and certification.

This Microsoft partnership with the Tennessee Department of Labor will assist citizens across the state in gaining technology skills training they need to move forward in today's economy. Individuals can take these free online courses from home, Tennessee Career Centers, or Tennessee Technology Centers.

State employees are also eligible to take advantage of this training. Employees interested in seizing this opportunity should register for vouchers from their personal e-mail address and take the training at home or offsite, unless their supervisor grants approval to take the training during working hours.

Tennessee will receive 11,500 vouchers for Microsoft Business Certification training, 11,500 vouchers for Microsoft Business Certification exams, and 2,875 vouchers for advanced Microsoft IT Professional online learning.

Vouchers can be used for the following training and certifications:

Computer Basics for Beginners - Access basic computer concepts and skills. Perfect for those new to computers. No voucher is required for the beginner courses.

Intermediate Level, Business Worker Online Learning - Select from: Microsoft Windows Vista, Office 2003 or Office 2007 online training. Voucher must be activated by July 26, 2010. E-Learning is accessible for 12 months from activation date.

Intermediate Level Certification Exams - Certification exams must be taken at a Certiport Testing Location. Select from Office 2003 or Office 2007 exams. Voucher must be activated by July 26, 2010. Certification exams must be completed by July 26, 2010.

Advanced Level IT Professional Online Learning - Select a training from Microsoft's online learning library for IT Professionals and Developers. The cost of certification exams at this level is not covered by this program. Voucher must be activated by July 26, 2010.

Tennessee's participation in Microsoft's Elevate America program makes it the 16th state to take part in the initiative, which is expected to provide up to one million vouchers nationwide. The program is a part of Microsoft's overall efforts to provide technology training for up to two million people during the next three years.

Fall 2010 Advocacy Project Application

The purpose of this project is to train volunteer advocates to provide instrumental and affective support to parents of children with disabilities. In this training, participants will learn more about special education law and advocacy strategies. At the end of the training, each participant will shadow an advocate at a special education meeting. Following graduation from the program, you will be linked with a family of a child with a disability. Each volunteer advocate is expected to work with, at least, four families, at the discretion of The Arc and STEP.

This is a comprehensive 6-week training to be held in the fall of 2010 (September 11th, September 18th, October 2nd, October 16th, October 30th and November 13th). Each training session will last 6 hours (beginning at 9AM (CST) and ending at 3PM (CST) and, in Eastern Tennessee, the training begins at 10AM and ends at 4PM, EST). The training will include a binder of materials including passages from: the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, No Child Left Behind, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Additionally, the participants will be given copies of each training session’s powerpoints along with relevant materials. For each training session, the participant will be expected to read pertinent materials. The training will be held on the Vanderbilt campus in The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. The training will also be video-conferenced to other sites across the state.

Furthermore, there is a $30 charge to cover the cost of materials for the training.

The Advocacy Project lasts for 6 weeks and requires participation at each session. The rigor of this curriculum requires energy and commitment from its participants. Along with these 6 sessions, the participants will shadow an advocate from The Arc or STEP to understand the proceedings of special education meetings. Biomedical Treatments and Therapies for Autism Spectrum Disorders

In this workshop, Dr. Kalb will review the primary treatments being used by health care providers trained by the Autism Research Institute to deliver a program of interventions referred to as the Biomedical Treatment Program for Autism Spectrum Disorders. These treatments include the use of supplements and nutritional approaches to treat the common maladies that many patients on the spectrum suffer from, mainly, disruption or dysbiois of the Gastrointestinal tract, food sensitivities, immune dysfunction and inflammation. Survey data suggests that these interventions help the majority of children with Autism. Dr. Kalb will also review the theories and research related to these treatments. There will be a question and answer period following his presentation.

Hello community!

I have put off sending this e-mail this year, hoping for the best time to do it - and now I fear the time is getting very close! I know that so many folks are dealing with the aftermath of our recent extreme rains, and that many people, and companies, are struggling with the current economy. BUT, if you can help in any small way, it would be so appreciated!

We are, again, seeking small item donations for our new class of Youth Leadership Forum Student Delegates. We present them with backpacks the day they arrive (July 5th), and we try to fill those packs with items that are fun, and useful. We're talking about: pens, pencils,
sticky note pads, writing pads, combs, toiletries and the like. We've also gotten: compasses,
ball caps, t-shirts & band-aids...you name it.

It's absolutely fine if these items have a company logo on it, as long as the company is not in the alcohol, tobacco or firearms kind of category. If you have a question about the appropriateness of a donation, just write or call me!

It would be WONDERFUL if we could have these donations by June 18th, sent directly to my attention at the address below.

We have 15 Student Delegates, and 4 returning YLF grads who are volunteering their time to be program assistants. So - if possible, please send 19-20 of each item.
