To me the "green" people are the ones you see carrying garbage bags when they go on walks (and picking up trash).
or my good friend Lana Sutton (find her on facebook) the night I met Lana we had dinner catered (by lucky chance) at an artist meeting in east brainerd. Lana was "stealing" the dirty plastic forks and knives and putting them in her pocket. I asked what she was doing and her reply "I'm afraid they won't recycle these correctly"
I don't think I'm that devoted to anything, save perhaps Karen.

My oldest son works for Whole Foods-he says that while they usually lean in the direction of the highest profit margin, as a company they do listen to their customers. So please go to their website and let them know you are concerned that they might no purchase from local farmers-heck, tell them if they don't you won't shop there! The store my son works for is just outside San Francisco and they do buy a lot of locally grown produce, herbs, and even locally baked and handmade items....

I love Lana to death but want to point out that we don't have the capability to recycle plastic eating utensils or bags in Chattanooga. Hopefully she found a way to re-use them instead. I sometimes use them as plant markers for seedlings ... And I agree, Karen is worthy of your devotion.

I shopped there now and then. Mainly like the lunch counter and fresh fish section. I also liked that you could by Pa's Salsa which my local Kroger quit carrying. In regard to being green I have my issues. I sometimes bring my own bags to the store. My biggest green stuff is: recylce glass, plastic and aluminum, miscellaneous paper. I compost vegetable food waste. I also try to keep my power bill down and not over use water etc. My wife cans from out garden and we also can vegetables other people give us. I think Greenlife is\was a good idea. I wish we could get a good farmers market going (the chattanooga market is good but a bit limited). I'd really like to be able to go to an open air market and buy local beef and chicken in addition to locally grown vegetables. I think it would work but I just don't think we have the support for it here that we need to make is sustaining. The Marin farmers market on the west coast is one of the biggest and most successful so it is doable if you can get the people supporting it. www.agriculturalinstitute.org/index/getMarketDetails?type=Markets&id=20080805091943.activeI got turned on to it by David Gans when I met him last fall at a house concert.

If anyone is looking for a place to recycle plastic bags, I will pick them up from you! I use them to make plastic yarn to crochet tote bags...

"good for chattanooga" sorry. no. not good for chattanooga. just b/c you're a cliched hater of the "green" stuff doesn't mean this is "good for chattanooga" while not detrimental to chattanooga,... it's certainly isn't good. It never stops. Anybody who is environmentally conscious get's the "oh yeah! well what about that car you drive you poseur!" you know what's green? your lawn. the forest. farms. Living "green" is a branding. It's a fabricated, yet highly effective, pop culture reference. To think it's silly is one thing. But to brutally hate on it just makes you look & sound ignorant. Lawns, forests, and farms are not "green." Lawns are a massive source of local pollutants due to the large amounts of chemicals we dump on them to keep them looking green. Not to mention the problems with managing rainwater runoff caused by the modern lawn. Forests, as managed by the US Government, are the largest source of air pollutants in the western US. To control and limit wildfires a forest must be managed; however, environmental protesters in the west protest the use of logging in forest management. The resulting solution is that the Bureau of Land Management must do controlled burns rather than log the land in the western states -- the result: 60% of the CO2 in the western US comes from the BLM's burning federally owned lands. Farms are incredibly toxic, and not subject to the same regulations that industry is. If you wanna live in a sophisicated world you have to have emmssions, exhaust, buildings, concrete, air conditioning, etc.etc. doesn't mean you can't be environmentally responsible as well. I live downtown and walk to work. My electricity bill last month was $25. Being environmentally responsible means being environmentally responsible. Name another business of it's kind that 1/2 their shoppers bring their own bags and/or recycle their already used bags. or one that uses ample supplies made from recycled materials. or one that has recycle bins for everything imaginable clearly marked. It's called an "Aldi." There's one in Brainard. It makes no claims of being green, its a German discount chain. One of the largest in the world. So yeah maybe GreenLife or any of these places that claim it aren't "Green" but they are not poseurs. and if you patron the place you are not a poseur. & if you like the idea of the "green" ideals you are also not a poseur. if you hate on this b/c your party line thinks it's stupid. You're not only a pompous asshole,... you are indeed the POSEUR Shopping at an overpriced grocery store does not make you environmentally responsible. It makes you effeminate. Who cares about a "Greenlife" when I can go down 11th street to where all the food distributors are and get the freshest fruits and veggies from P&P at prices cheaper than Walmart. Be very careful my liberal friend, you might see a homeless or black person from your car.

Just FYI - Beauty and the Beast uses only 2nd hand bags. We re-use coat hangers until they break... Then the wire ones are often cut up for something else. We recycle everything we can think of. We open the windows and run fans whenever possible. We even have a "green garden" on the back porch now. Costumes that get 'culled' are donated to local charities. Most of our rental costumes are made from domestic manufacturers and are over runs or defective bolts that would end up in a land fill somewhere.
Basically everything we used to do because we were 'poor' is now considered to be 'green' and is therefore popular.
As for the $25 light bill - Dude! - you got my skin flint mother beat.

my light bill last month was 28 dollars. we had an 11 dollar credit on the account so all we had to pay was 17 bucks.
and believe it or not people, go to walmart and buy the CFC bulbs, not the incandescent ones. they are like 4 to 7 bucks for 3 of them, depending on what wattage you buy. those make an incredible difference. the 100w incandescent uses well 100 watts of electric. the cfc equivalent uses 26 watts for the same amount of light and it runs much cooler. not to mention they last about 5 years. i havent changed a light bulb since i put these in back in early december.
another huge thing that helps, is we have a one element water heater and no washer or dryer in this small apartment. the water heater is set at 140, and if i wanted to drop it to 120 id have an even lower light bill.
but back to the light bulbs...........they really make a difference. and for those of you in bigger houses (i.e. 2 and 3 bedrooms, 2 bath) it would be a huge savings on your light bill. it costs a bit right up front, but the rewards each month are well worth the wait.
and the AC unit here in the apartment has an EER rating of just under 10 and it is a 5000 btu window unit and it does just fine with a fan moving the air around. the sticker on the housing when i got it a couple of summers ago claims that the unit uses about 45 dollars a year to run.

We use the CFC bulbs. They do make a difference. The overhead light fixture in the bathroom won't go over them, but who's going to notice?
