Today, the power company shut my power off. Seems I forgot to pay my bill last month. No big deal! we've all forgotten to pay bills before and we've all had to deal with reconnect charges and wait to have the service restored to whatever we forgot to pay. I'll just have to deal with it. What struck me as kinda...well, strange is how much I was charged for my fubar. Charge for reconnecting was $50 Charge for collecting outside of offices is $30. Charge for using my debt card was $5 ( I think) A total of 85 bucks! Now, I'm not complaining about having to pay extra for my fuck-up, after all it was my fuck-up. But damn, that hurt!

I feel your pain man. A couple months ago I got off work early to meet the cable guy at the house to replace a box, and coincidentally just that afternoon our power had been cut for late payment. I think it was $30 (or around there) for their inconvenience... but I kinda wonder if it's an inconvenience, or if it's actually a profitable thing for them. How bout a warning call? or email? Nope. They might just delight in cutting off the lights.

No doubt their making profit off of it. It certainly doesn't cost 50 bucks to send a tech to my house. Certainly doesn't cost 30 bucks to collect a payment.
I really feel bad for those that are going through rough times. Single parent, a few kids. Gotta decide to pay a bill or feed those kids. Then get charged nearly double of what the original bill was. Crazy!

but to TN Am. Water's credit. I F'ed up and went almost 2 months w/o paying my water bill,.. basically pushing my luck hardcore,... and got cut off last month.
cost $1.85 online payment fee and $15 reconnect fee.
so if you're not gonna pay a bill for a while. make it water

Actually, this was N.GA. Electric.
But yup, screw the water company! You can always buy water at WalMart. Can't exactly pick up a case of power anywhere else.

Criminal? That is capitalism in action. Are you a socialist or something?

That's what happens when you have a monopoly. That's not capitalistic. Capitalism would encourage competition.

This evening, I watched an advertisement on WRCB-TV3 for Tennessee American Water Company. My question is, "Why?" It's not like a person has a choice about which water company will be his or her source, right? So why spend the money on an advertisement? Its a ploy.... Expect a rate increase using this method as the cost of bringing you that high quality you demand.

What did the TAWC commercial say? Their booth at a recent Home Show was based on the idea "know your bill - we aren't the ones making you pay for this and this and this..." Says a man who works for the City. The same City whose taxes make up a HUGE chunk of your water bill The same City that is going nuts increasing your taxes under the guise of fees and fines...

They may be presenting the same message - the City probably charges you the same penny per gallon whether or not it goes back in their sewer. It is also nice to remind people that tap water is as high in quality if not better than bottled water and that there is no need to spend a few dollars a gallon

> What did the TAWC commercial say? It said TAWC ensures we get high quality water, reliably, for less than one penny per gallon. It should also have said.. And sorry, since we had to pay for this commercial, your bill will now be marginally higher...

Is the city trying to take over TAWC again?

Just think how much TAWC could save if they didn't have to keep spending all that money trying to protect themselves from a hostile takeover.

They just ran a TAWC commercial on WGOW and it was all about separating what you pay for your water versus what you're paying in additional taxes & fees.
Is the City trying to raise those fees again? Did they already?
