"Spring Cleaning" continues at work. This could take all summer at this rate. It seems that no matter how much we do, it doesn't LOOK like we've done anything but make a bigger mess. My niece Amie and I have been cleaning out the back rooms, culling the racks and packing up boxes to either store costumes off the hanging racks or donate... plus filling up the trash with things that no one could ever want. To an organized person, that probably doesn't sound like much... but for a pack rat like me, that is a Herculean task to start with. Now, add onto that the fact that we are still doing the laundry from the last three school plays which must be washed, hung up, have all the parts put back together and assimilated back into the racks that we have been culling... either in the front show room or taken to the back hanging storage area. Plus we just received 28 boxes of Halloween merchandise which had to be priced, stocked as much of it into the store front and then the rest carried to the back and stored....
OH! Let's just make my life really fun! A local store had a sale on better storage shelves so we are replacing all the old storage shelves in the back... you know, the shelves where we should be putting that new inventory. So we are now building one set of shelves at a time, stripping the boxes off the old shelves, piling them in the floor, removing the units, vacuuming the floor underneath then moving the new set in and replacing the boxes. And, because, the more you clean one spot, the more the NEXT spot looks dirty, we've decided that we need to re organize the entire back stock area because as we move all the boxes off the old shelves and put them back on the new ones, we're totally aware of the fact that our older 'filing system' is outdated and we need to move the boxes of things that we pull from most often to the front....
AFTER we finish the laundry, put it together in full sets, a '1/2 rental run' of 6 assorted sizes hung in their appropriate place on the front racks, extras taken to the back, finish culling the rest of the racks where all the costumes that came back after Halloween got washed and just hung up close to where they were supposed to be and then a dozen school plays plus hundreds of individuals dug through it all striping pieces off costume sets to make different outfits. AFTER we finish packing up the Donation boxes and drive them across town. AFTER we figure out where we are going to put the Keeper boxes. AFTER we finish putting all the new stuff out on the show floor and carry the left overs to the back. AFTER we finish replacing all the old shelving units so they don't fall on our heads... THEN we can figure out how to re-arrange the back stock and re-do the entire inventory list.
Oh yeah... and I still need to place that Forum order. And we STILL have Mardi Gras costumes in the window. And the customers can't get to the dressing room area because it's full of laundry that hasn't been put away and the middle of the floor is full of old metal shelves that might just collapse under their own weight at any moment. Did I mention that the Wig Wall needs a total overhaul? Or that the child size boxes have not been re-labeled in a few years and the pictures on the boxes have very little to do with what is actually IN them? And my local theater wants me to help out with another big movie promotion for next weekend.
Yeah. It's so much fun to work in a costume shop. All we ever do is play dress up all day long. I think if one more person asked "What do you do after Halloween? Sit around and twiddle your thumbs?"... I might just snap and beat the hell out of them right there on the spot. Bet that video would go viral.
