Not necessarily, Grid's nifty new camera has one heck of a built in zoom.

The goldfinch was on the birdfeeder on my front porch. It was barely over 2 meters away. I mostly used the zoom to shoot between the blinds

I would never shoot a bird...but I would never abide one, either.
The pistol I carry while mosing the lawn is only for sound effects, not lunch...but let me tell you a little something about birds.
(Even the only bird I have not instinctively despised is getting under my skin--but a pair of Barred Owl's makes Sleepy Time a thing of great difficulty, when it should not be so. Freakin' Birds.)

Barred owls RULE. There are some on my block. A couple of them were getting it on last week - not much else sounds creepier Carrying a pistol wouldn't help for anything because of that whole 'discharging a firearm in the city limits' thing, but I have been tempted to show a few squirrels how good a shot I am with a blowgun. Who am I kidding, I did show them, just not with pointy ammo...

Owls getting it on near Gridbug...that's some funny stuff right there You could always shoot the squirrels with BB guns

The blowgun is more fun! I've got blunt rounds that will just give them a start.
But then I remembered that thing on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory about what a pain in the butt it is to train squirrels, so I gave up on that idea. Best case I'd train them to avoid me, not the feeders.
But it was a fun idea while it lasted - LOL!

Regarding Avian Sleep Interruptions, LS! said: ...but a pair of Barred Owl's makes Sleepy Time a thing of great difficulty... No kidding. One night recently, trying to sleep, I heard a weird series of repeated sharp, cough-like plosives ending in quavering notes, repeated over and over and over. The owl did murder sleep. It took considerable research on the internet to tentatively ID the bird, but I think Barred Owl is correct. Other than that, birds are okay by me.

I love those Barred Owls. Gotta be the spookiest sounding critter I know (there are some sound files at this link).

Cool web site Grid, thanks for sharing Yah, as far as the movie....that's plain ridiculous how much time, effort, and money was spent training the darn squirrels... "Animal trainer Michael Alexander and his crack team of experts spent 19 weeks training 40 squirrels just for the squirrel room scene in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." I posted it in depth in the Old Country, but suffice to say...I was painting the inside of a house next to an open window when a Barred Owl I estimated to be six feet away and 17 feet tall gave a 'hoot' loud enough to make me fall back and nearly 'make dirt' in my pants. Healthy respect, despite the feet...but god DAMN it, a man has to sleep from time to time.
I do not harm 'birds', but I do not abide them, either. Barred Owls seem to be an exception though.
