I am a 1963 model human. Luther is one of my oldest Chattanooga childhood memories. My grandparents listened to him every morning and LOVED Luther. I loved my grandmothers biscuits and gravy ergo I love Luther too.
Pull up a chair and let's talk about Luther

I moved here when I was 19. Someone where I had just started work had an announcement that they said to call into Luther. I actually asked who "Luther" was! Heads turned!

Yes, before there was an internet, there was Luther. We listened to his show religiously at my house. If you wanted to know what as going on in the world of the Tennessee Valley, from school closing to public events to lost dog reports, you were listening.
My grandmother tells the story of a co-workers coming in from out of town. They worked for WT Grant Company. (Raise your hand if you remember Grant's!) The store was having some sort of big shindig for the CEO or an anniversary or something-or-other. The out of towners were getting on the bus and actually called out "When and Where do we meet?" The local called back, "I don't know. Call Luther!" They asked the bus driver, "How can I find information on this event?" He replied "Call Luther. He'll know." They got to the hotel and picked up the paper. There was nothing about the event listed. Again, the out of towner's asked the hotel desk for information and was told "Did you try calling Luther?" At this point, they got flustered and screamed "There IS NO One called 'Luther' associated with Grants! Who the hell is he and why would he know anything about this?"
Guess what. After the locals stopped laughing, they explained and gave the people the number for the radio station. Yep. You guessed it. Luther had the information.

One of my most vivid memories - I was about 7 years old, sitting in the kitchen eating my grits, using the portable dishwasher as a table. I refused to eat my grits at the dining room table like a good girl because I was listening to Luther - waiting, hoping & praying that he was going to announce a school closing for snow.

We had our first school closing for snow, ever, this year.

I can't believe he's still alive and kicking! He's as old as the hills! Great guy.

It's amazing that the man that has been on the air the longest of any broadcaster in history is not in the broadcaster's hall of fame.

If every Radio announcer who ever went on the air in Chattanooga from 6-10a with the intention of "beating Luther" were rehired, every Radio station in town could be fully staffed with live and local people and have enough jox left over to fill every volunteer position at Riverbend.

Not only has Luther been on the air longer than anyone else, he has been with the SAME COMPANY all this time. Find me one broadcaster that didn't bounce around from station to station during their career.

They said something on channel 12 noon news, that it was thought, that Luther is the only radio person that reported/annouced, both the D-Day invasion and 9-11. It's was a couple of weeks ago. I think I remember him telling the story that he was in the newsroom when the news of Pearl Harbor came in to the station.
