Lasting impression - War's effect still lingers for WWII veteran from Roane
By Sam Venable Posted May 30, 2010 Elmer Burnette's guardian angel signed on for the duration. And then some. In 1943, the young Army corporal from Roane County was astride a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, escorting an officer from Camp Bowie, Texas, to nearby Austin. Rain was falling heavily. Burnette's cycle struck a pile of loose gravel at the edge of the roadway, causing him to lose control. He was bruised, skinned and scratched the length of his torso. But he suffered no broken bones and, after medical treatment, quickly was back on duty. From then until his discharge on Oct. 31, 1945, that was Burnette's only injury - despite going ashore on D-Day and engaging in more than six months of close combat through Europe. "The Lord was looking out for me," he said. "He still is." Read more: knox news Thank you, Elmer Burnette, and all veterans.
Happy Memorial Day.
