If all goes well, grant money is going to be available for a “Parent Educator” program in East Tennessee. They’ll be looking to pay a “regional coordinator”, “parent trainers”, nd “specialist trainers”. The Regional Coordinator will coordinate trainers as well as the presenters who will be paid to give presentations on autism to parents, educators, and any other groups who would want them in the Eastern part of TN.
The job is part time with flexible hours (average 8hrs/wk). The person would have to travel to the presentations, but does not have to deliver them (although that is an option if the person is qualified). This means it will involve travel, and some evenings or perhaps weekend work.
This person would then coordinate all of the trainers and their orientations in our region. “Orientations” are what they call their presentations (very much like an Autism 101 presentation). The regional coordinator would schedule trainers (presenters), identify venues, recruit/manage trainers, sometimes coordinate childcare and supplies, monitor attendees, collect satisfaction survey data, and attend all orientations.
The person would need 1-3 years experience in event coordination, strong organizational skills with a high attention to detail, be a self-motivated individual who is a team player, but can work independently, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and have an understanding and familiarity with autism spectrum disorder. Salary would be negotiable based on experience.
Additionally, the grant will fund the “parent trainers” and “specialist trainers”. These people will go to a meeting in Nashville to update the existing “orientation” materials, including the presentation. The powerpoint and handouts have been revised many times so they’re very good already. But they want input from the people who will be delivering the training (from East, West, and Middle Tennessee). Once complete, the parent trainers and specialist trainers would then deliver the orientations to various audiences and receive $50 per presentation. These orientations can also serve as ‘train the trainer’ sessions so we can increase the number of trainers and thus have a large pool of educators. The regional coordinator will work with the trainers to schedule and coordinate all of the sessions.
Trainer requirements: The parent trainers must have a child with ASD who is a rising 1st grader or older. The specialist trainers must be Special Education Teachers, SLPs, OTs, Psychologists, Behavior Analysts, or Psychiatrists. The specialist trainer must also have done training/clinical work with individuals with ASD for at least three years. Some of these details may change and some are still being ironed out. However, it’s not too soon to express your interest. Please email me and let me know which of these jobs you might want and I’ll start compiling a list in case this goes through.

Each team is challenged to see how much additional donations they can raise for BIAT. On Thursday, June 17 there will be a briefing on Capitol Hill focusing on the need to have high expectations for children with Intellectual Disabilities when the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (formerly known as NCLB) is amended by Congress. The hearing, hosted by Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers of the House Education and Labor Committee, will be from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm in Room 122 Cannon Office Building on June 17. What the Briefing is About. The briefing will focus on how instruction and assessment of all children with intellectual disabilities must change to have high expectations. Witnesses include representatives of the National Center for Educational Outcomes and National Alternate Assessment Center who will discuss their groundbreaking research on 12,000 students who take assessments based on alternate academic achievement standards. Tom Hehir, a former Director of the US. Office of Special Education Programs and a current member of the NDSS Board of Directors will testify on a number of important educational issues affecting children with Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. The National Down Syndrome Society will also present testimony on behalf of NDSS and NDSC. Information will be presented on assessment, instruction, and Universal Design for Learning. Why the Briefing is Important! In my opinion, the education establishment has far too often underestimated children with intellectual disabilities, and they often receive educations that do little to prepare them for maximum adult independence. But if Congress doesn’t get the right information, including information like this briefing, the same old stereotypes of kids with intellectual disabilities will be perpetuated when ESEA/NCLB is reauthorized later this year or early next year. Please ask your Representative to Attend or Send a Staffer! NDSS is asking folks to call or email their Representative and ask them to come to the briefing or send a staff member. Getting someone in the room is half the battle, so they will hear the information and use it in their approach to ESEA/NCLB. Call your Congressional Representative at 202-224-3121 (TTY 202-225-1904). You will need to know your Representative’s name, which you can find at www.house.gov by putting your zip code into the box in the upper left corner. (You usually only need your five digit zip code.) When you are connected, ask for the aide who handles Education or Disability and leave a message if you are connected to voicemail. Its okay to tell the voicemail about the briefing and why you want the Representative to attend. In DC? Please Come to the Briefing to Show Support. NDSS is also asking for parents, advocates, children, and friends and supporters to come to the briefing to demonstrate community support on these issues. So please come out and show your support! Thursday, June 17 from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm in Room 122 Cannon Office Building. Please feel free to share and forward this message to others. Thanks to NDSS, NDSC, and Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers for the spotlight they are shining on this important issue. Even though the briefing is sponsored by the Down Syndrome Caucus, the focus is on all children with intellectual disabilities. The information and research presented applies to all children who take alternative assessments. Thanks much, --Jess Jessica Butler jessicabutler@ymail.com

Parent Stress Intervention Project The Parent Stress Intervention Project is now taking reservations for spaces for Tuesday morning (10:00-11:30 a.m.) and Thursday evening (6:00 - 7:30) sessions. Tuesday sessions start July 6 and end on Aug. 10. Thursday sessions begin July 8 and end on Aug. 12. There are only 24 spots for each session available, and spaces are expected to fill up quickly.

The Parent Stress Intervention Project will work with 400 parents, dads included, who will be randomly assigned to either a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program or to a Positive Parent Support Model for 6 weekly sessions and 3 booster sessions. These groups will meet on the Vanderbilt campus.
Free child/family care is provided for any children or adults who need supervised care.
Parents of children with disabilities, including adult children, who would like more information or are interested in participating in the study may contact Roxanne Carreon at (615) 875-5080, Roxanne.Carreon@vanderbilt.edu
