ProfessorX, made mention of cyclist shaving their legs in a somewhat derogatory manner a few weeks ago. While searching for some information on cycling this morning I ran across this article. I thought I'd share it. 5 Real Reasons Why You Should Shave Your Legs (That Have Nothing To Do With Aerodynamics) I have been shaving my legs for so long that I don’t even remember why I do it. It’s just instinct. Kind of like putting on my helmet or lathering up with chamois butter, I don’t think about why I do it, I just do it. And hey, it works fine that way. But there are so many myths and misconceptions about leg shaving, and so many articles that don’t quite get it right, I decided to put on my thinking cap and remember exactly why I shave my legs. You should always be able to make informed decisions, even if your information comes from some loon on the internet! So all my reasons to shave are listed below… ( Continued) After an accident last week that left blood flowing down the back of my leg due to a bandage not being able to maintain pressure on the wound because it was floating on top of the hair on my leg I contemplating shaving my legs for about ten minutes but decided it would be better just to not have accidents. I can understand being prepared for such accidents by shaving one's legs but I'm just too lazy to keep them shaved to really benefit from that. I'd have the crash the day after I decided not to shave for a bit longer. Add to that the fact that I sleep with a woman who will sometimes fore go shaving her legs because she wants to time the leg shaving to some special event and those legs can get awfully scratchy.

I shave my legs and I haven't mounted a bicycle since I was thirteen. Go figure.

I thought I'd share it. The point was not that cyclists shave their legs, its that they lie about the reasons. The real reason is vanity. The same with swimmers. They will shave off ever scrap of hair for hydrodynamics, but have a big goatee.

Just curious-how many men out there will admit to shaving their armpits?

It's the bacteria that break down sweat that cause sweat stains. That's what anti-perspirant is for.

Aluminum oxide hasn't been proven to cause Alzheimer's.
Shaving pitts = Not manly. At all. It's about as unmanly as you can get...

Shaving legs because few sights are uglier than some guy wearing spandex bicycle shorts with little wiry hairs sticking through.

Just remember, spandex is a privilege, not a right!
(My wife might want to see me in spandex, but I am 99.99% certain no one else does.)

Just remember, spandex is a privilege, not a right! (My wife might want to see me in spandex, but I am 99.99% certain no one else does.) Spandex is a reason a lot of cyclists shave their legs. If they go unshaven, the hairs tend to poke though the spandex. Since I went riding today for the first time in a long time, I am a convert! I am not just stopping at the legs either, I am going for the full brazillian wax. If you must know, I wore a solid color jersey and a padded solid color shorts ensemble. No poseur gear for me. I rode the awesome Tour de Moccasin Bend in my peloton of one. I expect my speed to improve after the brazillian waxing.

If you want to go again I'll be riding the Red Bank loop in what will probably end up as a group of one after the first six miles on Tuesday. If you want to join me just meet me around 5:30 at the old Red Bank BiLo at Browntown Rd. and Dayton Blvd. I'll be leaving the parking lot at 6:00pm.
Oh, my legs aren't shaved but I'll be wearing black spandex padded riding shorts and either a blue or a red cycling jersey with some white and gray accent on the sleeves.

I'd love to, but week day nights are bad for me. I usually don't get home until late. When you get the chance on a weekend, let me know. I am neither waxed nor shaved, The Wolfman comes to mind. Safe for work and funny.

Tuesday night I broke a spoke again and had to cut the ride short. It was a great ride up until then. I got seventeen miles in. Tonight at the battlefield things went great for about sixteen miles and then at mile seventeen I ran completely out of gas. One of the guys riding with me gave me an energy gel which got me through the rest of the ride. Tonight I got in 25 miles. I think my biggest problem was working in a hot manufacturing facility most of the day and riding with the humidity tonight. I was probably a little dehydrated from the beginning. I was also probably a little hungry. Stychen comes up to visit me this weekend. We will probably do a little easy riding down the Riverwalk and around town.

Im confused, why does a broken spoke shorten your ride? I know for a fact you can "run" with more than ten broken spokes. (don't jump anything and be wary of the "out of line" thing but you can get home with very few.

(don't jump anything and be wary of the "out of line" thing but you can get home with very few. A broken spoke means a spoke nipple is now in a position to puncture the tube, as mine finally did. At the point the spoke broke I was about to get to the section of the ride that would take me along Dayton Pike in several places between Falling Water and Soddy Daisy. I didn't want that to happen in those places so rather than risk a flat in a few dangerous places where I would have had little room to fix it I cut my ride short and headed home.

The Battlefield would be cool because of the lack of traffic. As for the heat, it has been crazy-hot. I'd like to go down and do at least a part of the Silver Comet trail. The power-gels are great. They have saved me a bunch of times. They are more or less pure sugar though. Back on topic, as far as shaving. I am going to be like the chicks and only shave from the knees down for the cold weather months (that's another joke).

I saw in the paper that they are paving the greenway at Camp Jordan. Now, if they'd just repave the levee, I'd have a better alternative to the Riverpark.

It's about 3 ft wide. It's not like it's going to stop water from being absorbed into the ground.
