No, this isn't an opening line to a joke....it's a serious question. I need something that's black (or dark), a liquid, and floats on water. Also needs to be environmentally friendly. Hershey syrup would be perfect but it doesn't float very well....
Any idears?

I thought I had a good idea, but I've decided it was stupid, so I deleted it. Good luck finding something!

I'm wondering if you can use something like saran wrap to float on the water with the black runny stuff on top of that. Water based paints or dyes will mix with the water and not float on top. Can you color some kind of vegetable oil to use it? How large of an area would you have to color?

Balsamic vinegar might work.

Can you color some kind of vegetable oil to use it? How large of an area would you have to color? It will be in the river so saran wrap will be hard to lay out. I thought out using a bottle of vegetable oil with a bottle of food coloring. It would also give off that oil shimmer....but because of that, I didn't want to freak out anyone that may see it later on. I don't expect anything to float or stay around for that long but I need something that will float and stay together just long enough for a few shots.

With all the crap floating in the river, I don't think anyone would notice. Ha.

The oil with food coloring would work well-use the paste food coloring that is made for cake decorating (in the Wilton aisle at Walmart). You can always skim some of it up when you are done, unless you are thinking about a major slick...

What are you attempting to depict? How large an area will you need for the pics desired?

Just a small area
"With all the crap floating in the river, I don't think anyone would notice. Ha."
True dat! My luck would have a TWRA officer see it after I leave, call for a huge clean up, and a fisherman would turn me in and I would get fined for dumping hazmat in the river.
