Just when everyone tries to forget how bad the economy is that is when you hear something bad again. BlueCross BlueShield in Chattanooga is getting ready to lay off another almost 150 people. Just great.

Wow-any word on what departments will be affected? I spent 7 years at BCBST...although I am anticipating a lot of knee-jerk reaction layoffs in our industry in reaction to the health care bill...

Area's in Medical Management and Operations in the VSHP - Volunteer State Health Plan and also the Operation's area; not the Commercial side of BCBST. It is affecting several different titles and levels from 7's to Medical Director's. Employees affected should know by 9/1 and will have 90 days to post for other positions; and if they do not have something by end of November you leave the company. Four Human Resources employees left a week ago; VP, Director and two other's; not sure what is up with that situation. This is major. The layoff (PACT) in March in the same are affected 38 people.

I've heard a good bit of speculation on that. Most of it was that it was a disciplinary action.

My rumor mill says that they're trimming the fat in the government side. Now that BC is at risk on tenncare some of the diversity hires have got to go.

BlueCross BlueShield Volunteer State Health Plan employees met for official meeting sessions today with Executives Dr. Coulter and Sonya Nelson announcing a layoff of 140 people 8/31. I wonder why? With the high reserves money they have that should keep it afloat until the new Medicare business begins with the 2 new contracts we supposedly won back. They will be hiring again beginning 2011 for the new contracts. They tell us about the terrible hit/losses this part of the business has taken so they are trying to come up with new strategies for the future. I wonder when this news is going to hit the papers?
