Finally wet to the zoo today. Did you know crows can talk? One of them greeted me with a "hello" when I got to them and continued to flirt with me for another 10 minutes.

Chattanooga Zoo is a joke. And I bet you even went, once. And how many years has it been? The animals are cared for, the cages clean. Not true with a lot of larger zoos.

So, no real answer. You just said it to say something, eh Goom?
dvc, I enjoyed the Chattanooga zoo about as much as I enjoyed the Audubon zoo. Considering how much closer you can get to the animals, in some instances I liked it more. Heck, any other zoo and that capybara would be contained a good 10' away from any human instead of able to just walk through the inner "fence" to hang out not but 1' away. No, I rather liked our little zoo. Didn't even pay a bundle to go in. My lunch at City Cafe cost more.

Did you know Hank the chimp was once shot by the police?
He escaped and bit off a zoo worker's finger.
The late Park Policeman Hosea Love confronted Hank; when he didn't surrender, Love shot him with a .38.
Hank recovered to live a long, full life. But, if you "draw" on him and point your finger, pistol-like, he'll duck, just like he should have then.

Once upon a time, our Warner Park Zoo was a sad little thing with pitiful, sickly animals in small cinder block cages. Now, only reptiles are kept in those old cages, and even they have decorations. Darty Long and the Board have done AMAZING things to bring our Zoo up to modern standards. It's really pretty cool.
BTW - Crows can also count to 3. Beyond 3, they can only think "group". I remember seeing a documentary about their intelligence many years ago. The scientists were saying that in order to trick the crows, they had to send 4 people into the blind, then have 3 leave before the crows would come out and go back to regular activity for the camera man. If less than 3 went in, the crows knew there was still someone in the blind and would avoid the area.

The Chattanooga Zoo is awesome. My family was blessed that our daughter volunteered there for several years and we got to see a lot of the initial changes, not the big ones, but the small ones that started the ball rolling. It was such an awesome learning experience for her and for us. I've been to bigger zoos (Nashville, Knoxville, Atlanta), but overall, I like ours best. Probably the only one I like better is the National Zoo in D.C.

Is this the same Hank that used to be in a cage on Hwy 64 at the Putt-Putt course many years ago? That Hank escaped one time and it took them forever to catch him. LOL. My granma thought the end was coming when she saw a monkey in the trees around the community. He also bit the hell outta Joey Little's hand when he stupidly stuck it into Hank's cage. Did you know Hank the chimp was once shot by the police? He escaped and bit off a zoo worker's finger. The late Park Policeman Hosea Love confronted Hank; when he didn't surrender, Love shot him with a .38. Hank recovered to live a long, full life. So healthy crows in clean cages make a good zoo.I have been, several times and yes it's a joke compared to other zoos, hell even Zoo World in PCB has a far larger variety of animals on about the same acreage and it is a very clean zoo.

While it isn't OMG stocked simply full of different animals in small habitats just to pack in more variety in a small area, I was pleasantly surprised. The Audobon Zoo it isn't, Grassmere it isn't, but a nice, small, local zoo with lots of quite personable critters that were visibly well cared for, including several that were obviously rescued from less than idyllic situations (the tailless cougars, for instance) it is.
If you don't like it, drive a couple hundred miles out of town and spend more.

Probably the only one I like better is the National Zoo in D.C. That would mean the NZ has improved since I was there in the mid-80s. Good -- it was really bad back then. Big cats in depressing concrete enclosures, and two smaller species (no longer remember what they were, just call them A & B) -- with B's placard reading "the B's only natural enemy is the A" and the A was in an adjacent enclosure with only a chain-link fence separating them. The one cool thing about the zoo was the grey wolves howling mournfully at twilight.
