While I was working in Chattanooga this past summer I got involved with the Main Street Bike Co-op. I found it to be very rewarding and fun. The bike co-op gives kids an opportunity to do a little work in exchange for a bicycle and the knowledge of how to maintain and repair it. Every kid needs a bike but, more importantly, every kid needs to learn skills that they can be proud of and use throughout the rest of their lives. Bike co-ops make this possible for a lot of kids who have no other way to acquire any of it. It also gives the child a mentor that he or she can look up to.
Now I'm back in Lawrenceville and I've located a bike co-op fairly close to do some volunteer work with. Communicycle is in Chamblee and they have applied for a Pepsi Refresh grant.
