I just heard a commercial about "Look at all the things you can spend your gift card on" basically encouraging people to come buy things with the gift cards they got for christmas.
My question is why would they spend money to get people to come use gift cards? Once they're bought they've got the money.

People who make purchases with gift cards hopefully will purchase either something more expensive that the card will pay for and/or find additional items to purchase.
The recipient is under no pressure to spend that card and may delay that upgrade or additional purchase.

Yeah, it's kind of like "loss leaders", where they advertise something way cheaper than normal, hoping you'll buy other things once you are in the store.

Bob,
I've heard the stores can't count the sales of the gift cards until they are redeemed, so they are wanting those numbers in so they can say how well their sales were for the season.

I don't think so. The gift cards are "the sale" if what you say is true you couldn't buy a gift card with a gift card. You can't buy a visa card but you can buy almost any other. (I say almost because I've only tried a couple)

Gift Cards are SALES!! WalMart held an instore contest with their cashiers for Christmas. Those that sold the most NEW cards got a $100 gift card.
Well Why do they want you to use them? INVENTORY!!! They have to pay for the stuff sitting on the shelf at a marked up rate to get the profit margin. BUT they would love for you to buy a dozen or so $100 cards and sit on them also, That money sits in a bank account earning interest.
Gift cards are a win/win deal for major retailers. They get your money and earn interest on it until it is exchanged for merchandise.
