Some of you may have made the resolution to learn how to play an instrument this new year. Here is some information to help you with your musical quest:
Ready for the big rundown of classes? Here it is! Oooh, and there are some good ones in there! Pass this on to that friend or family member who's been talking about getting started playing an instrument, or needs some extra motivation to continue work on the instrument they already play.

Beginner Classes
Intro to Bluegrass Banjo
Instructor: Randy Steele
Meets: Tuesdays at 6:00pm, starting Jan 11.
In this introduction to the banjo you will have an opportunity learn the basics of Bluegrass Banjo. Topics cover will include tuning, reading tablature, basic left and right hand techniques that will get you started playing tunes! No experience required. This class is ideal for the beginner as well as anyone that wants to refresh the fundamentals.
Intro to Guitar

This class will focus on getting started playing folk-style and flatpick guitar, playing chords, picking out single melody notes, and learning to read tablature.
Intro to Fiddle

Get started playing any style of fiddle music in this class that will focus on learning and improving basic fiddle techniques.
Intro to Mandolin

Students with little or no experience on the mandolin will learn the techniques to be able to play melodies and chords by the end of this class. We will start at the beginning introducing the fret board, fingering techniques, holding the instrument, scales, and chords.
Intro to Mountain Dulcimer

Meets: Thursdays at 7:30pm, starting Jan 13.
This introductory class will get you started playing melodies (with drones and chords) on the mountain dulcimer. We'll explore different tunings, strumming patterns, begin to understand some chord theory, and cover the basics that will prepare you for participation in a jam or another class. This class is open to parent/kid duos who want to learn together, and the Folk School does have a few mountain dulcimers available for rent if you'd just like to try it!
Intro to Hammered Dulcimer

Get started playing one of the most beautiful instruments on the planet. We'll learn the layout of the instrument, good hammer technique, rhythm exercises, chord patterns, and several tunes in different keys. Rental instruments available.
Intro to Clawhammer Banjo

Learn right hand technique and good rhythm. We'll also learn a few tunes and work on playing along with old time fiddle tunes.
Beyond the Basics
Acoustic Bass

You've been playing for a while now, and you're good with a 3-chord song. You know how to play in D and G and can find F and B. Where do you go from here? What is the next step for the acoustic bass player? This class will cover how to anticipate "unexpected" chord changes, and how to branch out from just keeping time. Class Instructor, Merielle Flood, has accompanied country, folk, singer/songwriter, modern jazz, blues, bluegrass, and old time bands. Explore the many possibilities on the acoustic bass.
Fretboard Theory

Meets: Wednesdays at 7:30pm, starting Jan 12.
This is a music class for people who play some guitar, banjo, mandolin, or any fretted instrument and would like to know more about how music and harmony works. Bring your instrument.
Tinwhistle

Meets: Mondays at 6:00pm, starting Jan 10.
This class offers an introduction to the Irish tinwhistle for students with little or no prior experience. Instruction will start with the most fundamental techniques and a few very simple tunes. Tunes will be learned by ear, but sheet music will be made available after each lesson. Don't have a tinwhistle in the key of D? The Folk School can provide you one for $10. Please bring a recording device.
Advanced Beginning Mandolin
Instructor: Dean Arnold
Meets: Mondays at 7:30pm, starting Jan 10.
This much needed/requested class that will take players who have plunked a few chords, tunes or parts of tunes and want to go to the next level. Maybe you want to play in a jam session, perform for friends/church, or just have more fun playing the mandolin. Maybe you missed something along the way or just need a reminder or two. This is the class this is the class for you. We will focus on technique, tunes and some theory to get you jump started. After this class you will have that barking "G-chop" down for your rhythm playing and get some tunes that you can take to a jam session. A great stepping stone for the Mandolin 2 class.
Intermediate Classes
Easy Fiddle Tunes -(Not just for fiddles!)
Instructor: Christie Burns
Meets: Wednesdays 7:30pm, starting Jan 12.
In this mixed instrument class, we'll tackle two tunes per week to build your old time, Irish, and bluegrass jam session repertoire. Students should bring a recording device. We'll learn the tunes by ear, and then printed music will be provided at the end of each class for you to take home.
Fiddle 2

Meets: Tuesdays at 7:30pm, starting Jan 11.
A class for beginning to intermediate fiddlers who are looking to learn more techniques and tunes! We'll be exploring a variety of more complicated fiddle techniques including a new bowing exercise every week as well as some left hand exercises. We will cover an array of songs from several genres of fiddle music including Irish tunes, waltzes, old time favorites, and bluegrass classics. This class is for semi-experienced fiddlers looking to learn more about the music and the instrument. Basic music reading ability will be required.

Intermediate Flatpicking Guitar

For beginning to intermediate flatpickers looking to learn some more tunes and techniques! It is recommended that you be able to pick at least a couple of songs comfortably. We will be learning some of the classic flatpicking tunes while studying some of the great players who made them famous. Along with the tunes will be some exercises to build speed and technique, as well as some exercises to focus on specific new techniques we will be learning. We will cover a few scales and talk about how to play in different keys on the guitar. Basic TAB reading ability is recommended but not required.

Well here's your chance, we're going to be going over some classic, some new, some silly, some learning, and some super fun songs to play and sing with the children in your life. No musical experience is required but it is welcomed. We'll be going over song lyrics, melodies, and chords for a whole bunch of songs as well as the folklore behind a few of the oldies. This class will be child friendly so feel free to bring your young'un and lets have some serious fun.
Advanced Classes
Advanced Fiddle

For fiddlers looking to broaden their knowledge of the fiddle, sharpen their technique, and increase their playing ability! Through the more complex songs we'll be looking at, we'll cover a variety of styles of music as well as some of the more subtle techniques that make those styles unique. We'll also study famous fiddlers and their techniques and styles that make them classic.This class is for more experienced fiddlers who are comfortable playing intermediate to advanced tunes. Moderate to advanced music reading ability is required.
Ragtime Guitar

Songwriting

Every songwriter has his or her own process for getting inspiration, working with an idea, and knowing when a song is finished. This course will be about finding a productive strategy that ends with a song you would like to play more than once. We will explore some of the tools I've used over the years and I'll share which ones have worked and which ones haven't. What I look forward to the most, though, is having everyone mix it up and play around with each other's ideas. A large part of the sessions will be devoted to listening to each other's incomplete and finished work and, perhaps, co-writing.
Ensemble Classes
Folk Roots Ensemble

This class will focus on playing songs that became some of the most influential sources of the folk music scene in America. The Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music "brought virtually unknown parts of America's musical heritage to public attention and created a cultural wave with a lasting impact." People influenced by these recordings include: Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Jerry Garcia, Patti Smith, Dave Van Ronk, and many many more your teacher of this class. And we'll be learning, playing and interpreting these songs and having a blast doing it.
Songs of Women in Folk Music (aka, Babes in Bluegrass)

Irish Session Tunes

This class offers an introduction to playing Traditional Irish Music for students who already have some experience with the basics of their instrument and can play some tunes at a slow pace. This class is for those who play melody instruments common to the Irish tradition such as fiddle, mandolin, Irish flute, tinwhistle, tenor (4-string) banjo, hammered dulcimer, button accordion, concertina, uilleann pipes, and harp. This course will cover several common Irish session tunes and include instruction on how Irish music works, different types of tunes, ornamentation and variation, a bit of Irish music history, and some basic session etiquette. Tunes will be learned by ear, but sheet music will be made available after each lesson. Tinwhistles, Irish flutes, and uilleann pipe chanters should be in the key of D. Please bring a recording device.
