Architect Don Wamp - Father Of Ex-Congressman Wamp - Dies
Suffered Fall While Leaving His Office To Play Tennis

Chattanooga architect Donald Louis Wamp Sr., 78, has died after suffering a fall on Friday morning at his office.

He had finished working at the office and was on his way to play tennis when he fell.

Born in Cullman, Ala., he was the son of a carpenter and homebuilder. He graduated from Cullman High School and went on to Auburn University where he serve as the ROTC Cadet Commander, played xaxophone in the marching band, was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha and graduated from the school of architecture.

After basic training as a commissioned officer, he fell in love with and married his lifetime partner and wife 56 years, Mary Beth Meadows Wamp. Following his military service as an Army pilot, the family moved to Chattanooga to begin his architectural career which would span over 50 years and result in the design of over 1,000 commercial, residential and industrial business in the Chattanooga area alone. As a leader in his profession he served both local and state president of the AIA (American Institute of Architects).

His service and activity in the community included acting as city of East Ridge commissioner of recreation, co-founding United Bank of Chattanooga and serving as a captain in the Army National Guard. Over the years he remained an avid tennis player winning many local and state titles.

Regardless of what you might think of Zach or his politics, and as one with elderly kin, this is an unmitigated tragedy unworthy of anyone having to suffer.

When Zack and Lou were young, before Don "made it" they lived across the street from my Grandmonther in East Ridge. GOOD PEOPLE.

Later after he "made it" but was still in East Ridge Lou and I rode skateboards every few days. Zack was in college. Met Mr and Mrs Wamp several times, they were always super even before they found out my mom and dad were friends.

To loose someone is bad, to loose someone like this hurts worse.
