How do you get around giving out your zip code at a gas pump?

Zippy at the pump is a "security measure". It is encoded in the magnetic info and if not entered right the card will be declined.
Found out the hard way once.

When asked for a zip code or phone number, I tell them to enter their own, as my information is only available to my minions. Or I use the station number.

I tell them I am homeless.
Or tell them the truth, if they call me I WILL talk dirty to them and I do. Talking dirty works EVERY time.

I've never gave my phone number, zip code if I'm paying cash because it doesn't bother me that much. I did have one cashier ask me for my number and my only response is I'll give you mine if you give me yours. I guess I wasn't her type.

When they ask for a phone number I use 423-698-2525.
True that, about ZIP codes at the gas pump for security. You can always go inside to use the card and avoid that.
ZIP codes at retailers = marketing "survey": where our customers are coming from helps to target advertising efforts. I use 90210. Try buying a couple of radio spots in LA to pick up your Beverly Hills traffic.
As for giving out the station number, that could possibly create a problem... I'd hate for the boss to get a call from a retailer saying, "...please tell Mr. Poole that the manufacturer has issued a recall on those Extra Large Double-Ended Dongos...bring it back in for a refund!" (Actually, when I was in that business, my boss got some stranger calls than that about me.)

I've been known to give my phone number as something like
875-15294
Let them figure it out.
No, that number has nothing to do with my phone number. It's just an example I pulled out of, uh, the air.

Yoda, this is fun, too...
"Phone number is 87-51529." [Starts punching keys] "What?" "8751-529" [Fingers searching...] "Um...huh?" "OK, one more time: 8-751-52-9." "Um..." "Last time...142-387-515-2-9." [Keys click as she types in her own phone number] "Thanks."

they use zip code to focus where the customers are as to where to spend their advertising dollars. Phone numbers are used to track sales and when you bring the item back it speeds up the return process and in the case you lose the reciept they will still honor your return. Take off the tin foil hats. They really don't give a damn who you are you'll be shocked it's not always about you..
