The place where I work has blocked access to facebook and a lot of other websites. Any advice on a cell phone or other device (other than a laptop) that I could get to use to get access?

the iPhone, now that you can get one with Verizon is good and the Droid is getting great reviews.
Might I suggest you go try some on? send a text message to a couple of people, surf here or some other web page and see how it "navigates" go to the photo section to see how fast it loads graphics.
Try them all [grin]

I'm a converted iPhone user. I have a droid and I will say the two things I miss from the iPhone is the Facebook app and the music player.

Funny how many prospective employers look for "a strong on line presence" at interview time until you go to work for them.
Then, it's like the Stalinist Gulag just trying to stay in touch with other employees, much less the world at large....

I can't find a facebook app for my rotary dial phone.
So I just put a mirror on it and now I'm happy. It is all about me and my voices!

iPhone is the best all-around smart phone and with AT&T, it's twice as fast as on Verizon (verified scientifically in nationwide testing by speedtest.com). And since AT&T has had iPhones since earlier models, you can get those earlier models at a discount instead of paying full price at Verizon for the only model they have. No, I don't hate Verizon, it's a good company, but AT&T doesn't suck like so many people are brainwashed into believing, either.

I had AT&T before Verizon. Not brainwashed, it truly did suck. Constant dropped calls between here and Cary NC (think Research Triangle Park, not a backwater) and when connections were stable, often a horrible wind sound on the calls. Drive around Chattanooga, constant dropped calls going from one neighborhood to another. Along the Interstates, constantly running into dead zones. Since switching to Verizon, I haven't had nearly as many problems.
As for iPhones, I won't get one because they won't let me put any program I want onto it. It's my phone, but they have total control over it. I have only one source for software (their App Store), and if I want to write my own software for it, I have to pay them to be a developer, then get them to approve the software, before I can put MY software onto MY phone. No way. Not going to do it.
Android isn't a whole lot better, either, along those lines, but some. I won't get either until they figure our how to partition the phone code from the rest of the code, so that it is both possible and safe to run any application you want without worrying about breaking the phone functionality. Now that most mobiles are going dual core, or even quad core, that shouldn't take too much longer, then we can have a good phone and a good mobile computing device without all of the artificial limitations.

Since switching to Verizon, I haven't had nearly as many problems. Same thing here. Back when my job required all kinds of back-woods travel, I had at least one phone from all of the major carriers. AT&t, Sprint, SunCom, Nextel (before the merge) Verizon, and even tried Cricket for about a month. Verizon was the only one that would actually work, anywhere. The rest of the carriers wouldn't even make it across the ridge cut without dropping calls, which was unacceptable. Since then, though, all carriers have updated their services and towers and now they're all about the same. That major update happened around '08... or '09, maybe (I know a couple tower climbers that did the update). I now use an AT&T phone, again. It's just as good as the Verizon I had for years. Actually, the Boost(uses Sprint network) that I had last year was just as good, too.

It was 2007 or so when we switched, so if they have upgraded, I would have missed it. But, once bitten, twice shy so they say.

I started with cingular, brick phone. After many upgrades and new phones and contracts I added "rollover". Several years later I needed a new phone. I had thousands of minutes rolled over (started before they expired) When I asked what kind of deal they would give me (they had just become AT&T) I was told I could not keep my saved minutes, I could not keep my plan (had to pay about $40 more a month for a little less)
I said, I've been a customer of yours since cell phones were too big to carry and you're offering me nothing to remain a customer?
He said "nope"
I've been using sprint since.
I carry an iPod touch and love it.

So, Sprint has good coverage? I am looking at Virgin Mobile, they have some great deals, but I am worried about coverage. I am told the coverage is what Sprint has.
I called Verizon, I have been with them since 1996. Told them I was thinking about cancelling because it is a much better deal with Virgin Mobile. They told me they would hate to lose such a good and loyal customer, and I should think about how they have the best coverage and the best customer service and stay with them. I said "so, there is nothing you can do to give me a better deal so I can say", they said "no, sorry, we can only work within certain parameters and we would really hate to lose you". Well, of course you would hate to lose my monthly check. I have heard from a couple of friends that had VM and said they loved it.

Mine was $200 with a two year contract. I have no idea where you heard $100 for monthly maintenance. The only other real cost is it needs a $30/mo unlimited data package.
$450 is a fair price if you think of it as a handheld computer/GPS/camera/MP3 player/flashlight/paperweight... OK, I got carried away there (they DO make fine flashlights and paperweights), but these are NOT telephones. They are more of an Information Age Swiss Army Knife.

Our power and cable were knocked out yesterday. The power came back last night, thank goodness, but the cable connection for the street, I guess, is still lying out in the middle of the road. Oh well. The house did not get hit by a tree!

I was lucky too! Did you see that house on the 500 block of Forrest? A huge tree basically removed the upstairs room! Mashed it flat. :-(

I have friends on Graham and Crewdson that still don't have power. The house at 502 Forest also belongs to a friend of ours, and he still doesn't have power either. Do you?
