WOOT! Lake Winnie is giving the old Castle ride a total face lift. I'm not allowed to say exactly what's going on, but it's pretty amazing. They are busily revamping the entire ride into a "Fun House" suitable for all ages for the summer season. I can't wait to see it finished!
Then, for Halloween, they will change it all over to Spooky fun for older kids and grownups. The turn over from "Fun House" to "Spook House" will be a very dramatic contrast. Very Exciting things are happening!

Do you have an inside scoop on Lake Winnie?

Scarlett, the only way they can revamp THE Castle is to allow the rider to go to the second level like it used to be back in the early 80's. Back then it had the psychedlic spinning wheel at the top of the second level drop.

Sadly, it will take MAJOR renovations to get the second story open again. Contrary to rumors floating around, the upper deck was closed to install a sprinkler system for the lower level. Pipes for the sprinklers are running all over the floor over the old tracks. In order to re-open, it would all have to be torn out and re done. The upper level is currently being used for storage space.

True and you can count on it never being the same ride ever.

I take it you're not big on amusement parks

Lake Winnie is one of the few remaining old school amusement parks. While I must admit I like the big mega parks like Six Flags too, there is a certain charm the older, smaller parks have that the big parks could never match. Plus, I can ride the Cannonball back to back all day long without waiting in line for more than a few minutes. Try that on the Scream Machine sometime. (I love, love, love the old wooden coasters.)

Indeed, if you get there early enough there's no line at all. I had a blast riding that old wooden roller coaster last year.

For such a small coaster, The Cannonball does offer some great air-time.

Did he design The Pippen at Libertyland, that was a great ole-timey coaster too.

Bill, If I am not mistaken the Cannonball was one of his last coasters. Allen was close to his 70's went the Cannonball was built back in 1967.

He is credited in the design of 8 more coasters. Of those include Racer at Kings Island in 1972, Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags over Georgia in 1973 and the Screamin' Eagle at Six Flags St. Louis in 1976. Which is also the last, he passed away in 1979 of a ripe old age of 72.

Never been to the Six Flags in St. Louis, but I say thumbs up to The Racer at Kings Island, although the Beast at Kings island is my all time favorite wooden coaster my far. The Mean Streak at Cedar Point is my 2nd fav, and The Great American Scream Machine is a close 3rd.

Lake Winnie is a perfect park - especially for Mom's like me who aren't really keen on getting on those giant roller coasters. It's just not FUN for me to pay $45-50 to get into 6 Flags then spend most of my time standing in line to put my husband and son on a roller coaster while I hold the bags and wait for them to disembark 90 seconds later.
Even for those who consider the park to be an over grown carnival, it's still one heck of a bargain. The Unlimited ride pass is only $25 - half the price of 6 Flags. It's CLOSE! Which is a big deal with gas prices threatening $6 this summer. The park food isn't THAT over priced. Funnel cakes are fabulous, huge and less than $5 and the management actually encourages people to bring a pick nick lunch.
It's a very fun -Inexpensive- place to spend a day with your friends or family.

I agree, all those big parks are either once every 2-3 years or once in a lifetime, Lake winnie is a good 2-3 times a year destination.

I was trying to find a link, but don't seem to see anything on the web about Lake Winnie 'unveiling' the Wacky Factory (old Castle) ride on Don Welch's This N That yesterday. While you only got to see the new outside facade on the show, they did explain that it will be a Fun House type atmosphere. I do have photos and am assuming that the Lake Winnie people won't mind me posting the Facade shot as seen on TV. (as soon as I remember to bring home the camera!)
The whole thing is still under construction, but what I've seen is Amazing. Every area is getting a complete over haul. Many of the same structures are still there - that would be difficult and expensive to replace - but what is left at least got a fresh paint job to make it look more modern. Most of the older scenes have been removed or covered up. Lots of new effects have been added to make the ride bright, exciting and enjoyable. There will be a few 'surprises' to hopefully make you jump, but the idea is to leave you laughing and happy in a way that's not to scary for the little ones.
