...is harder work than I am used to, even a very small tree. A friend of ours gave us a little Chinese chestnut plant, about six inches tall, last Fall. Now about ten inches, outgrowing the pot we put it in for the winter. I have been promising my Beloved to plant the tree, and this morning I did so.
Two hours it took, for a hole only about two feet by two feet by two feet deep. I filled back some with loose dirt, and placed the tree with its ball of potting soil/dirt in the hole and filled it in. Why is there always dirt left over after you fill a hole you dig? A question to ponder.
I hope the tree survives my clumsy arborage. Yesterday was Arbor Day, after all.

Because it was compacted before it was dug up.

Did you get another one for pollination?

I believe it has a small sprout beside it. Let's just hope the lawnmower guys don't run over it!

Put a stake next to it to keep the mowers at bay. You may be wise to not have a pollinator...unless you enjoy cleaning up chestnuts each time you need to mow. Of course, that probably won't be an issue for 10 years, or so.

Definitely put a stake there or otherwise cage it till it gets too big for the mowers to go over it. Paid lawn service guys pay no attention to seedlings. I know, I pointed my seedling forsythia out to them to NOT MOW DOWN and the very next day they mowed one down, two weeks later they got the other.
