I knew "bug lights" were yellow and bug zappers were blue but didn't know exactly why.
from an email: Most flying insects are attracted to light and in particular to blue and near ultraviolet wavelength light.
Because these bugs have difficulty "seeing" yellow light, fewer insects will join you on the patio if you light it with yellow bulbs.
Also the warm glow of light from these bulbs prevent annoying "white light" glare that can sometimes result at night from a standard bulb.

What do red lights on your porch do?

I have used the "bug" lightbulbs before....they seemed to help a little. Unfortunately, lady beetles were attracted to them, so I ended up with a very neatly "dotted" light globe.
