I'm really sketchy on this, but I seem to recall that a local radio station was involved with the kudzu ball but insurance issues got in the way.
I tried to verify the statement above but have been unable to do so thus far.
My curiosity is aroused.
I'll ask David Carroll. Maybe he (or one of his contacts) knows.

From www.kudzuworld.com/Kudzu/Archive/TheKudzuFile.pdf[PopTart addendum: in the early-mid 1980s, a group of young professionals and artsy types in Chattanooga, Tennessee held a public "Kudzu Ball" for charity (complete with prizes for the most imaginative incorporation of kudzu into one's evening apparel) the same night as the city's "real," "society" debutante ball, The Cotton Ball, was held. Since the beginning of The Riverbend Festival, the Kudzu Ball ended and the Cotton Ball has steadily declined in importance.]So I guess they moved across the river and went all out. Guess the FOF forgot their roots. which may be a good thing since the city spent all our that money on the the water front....... hmmmmm
