Twice a day I drive down 11th Street past the Homeless Feeding Place. And, every day I see throngs of folk milling around getting ready for a nice, free, hot meal. And, every day I wonder why they're standing and sitting around doing nothing when there is trash - plastic bottles, cigarette butts, and assorted other bits and pieces of garbage scattered around the building. Why can't we get these people to do a little work for that food? Police up this area before getting in the chow line. Just a thought.

How politically incorrect of you. Next, you'll be spouting how the safety issue down town is due to unsupervised black youths....

Why should they work if they can get food for nothing? I see a lot of homeless, and most would be anything but. They're depressed because they can't get a job and can contribute nothing to their family. Hard to get a job as it is!Their also some who are "entitled" and it's our responsibility to give them stuff.

Why does it take volunteers to unload trucks, stack food, prep food and serve it? Lots of jobs right there...

Exactly what time do these lines form up? Since I am a cop, and thus, subsequently, below the poverty level (Thanks, Mayor Littlefield!) I just need to know when to take 401.
Hopefully; they can schedule these times at CPD shift change so we can stop by for a free meal on the way to turn our cars in.

Sympathy even for the "itinerant" in this case, as they were the most cruelly used by this spavined administration for the basest of purposes, to wit: the propagation of illegitimate political power.
I sincerely hope there's a Dantesque hottest bolgia of everlasting HELL for all these sons of bitches

Some of you have made me feel appropriately guilty, so I'll stop by on the way to work this morning and grab a few butts...so to speak.
Officer Moderator, that's about 6:45a. You're welcome to join me at my table.
Tsavodiner: I'm not sure what you said but I think I agree.

I'm thinking about having some to-go bags printed up so these folk can take their leftovers back to...uh...wherever they come from, with the logo, "I'm a Friend of Ron L."

My big thanks to the good job that Brother Ron and the Community perform for those that need a hand! I rather enjoy volunteering down there. Whatever... If it bothers you that much, don't drive that way. Is this your best whine about those that feed the poor? Where in the Tennessee law is that? When my club goes, we being bags for just that, and not a lot of us are friends on Ron L But if it matters all that much to you, why not print them yourself and donate them?

What is the funding source for this? If the money is not tax derived, what's the problem? (Or even if it is.) Sounds like an appropriate community response. Do those who object want to volunteer to interrogate the folks to see if they "deserve" to be fed?

"Whatever... If it bothers you that much, don't drive that way. Is this your best whine about those that feed the poor?" I must confess, I'm not that smart, that's why I have to work hard. But, I've read my initial post several times and I just don't see any reference to "those that feed the poor."
I didn't expect to have to explain, but, let me try (please indulge an old guy): As a benevolent society - Chattanooga more than many others - we have an obligation to help those who, for whatever reason, have difficulty helping themselves. Some need a little boost, some need serious help, some need assistance to stay alive. I see nothing wrong with requiring those who are able to provide a little work for their "entitlements."
Is that in "Tennessee law"? That was a rhetorical comment I would think.
And, the reference to "Friend of Ron L." was probably the most politically-incorrect allusion of all. If you're a Friend of Bill W., I apologize.

To me the "work" should be understood. But so many people have the "what's in it for me" attitude that happens less and less. There are also people standing in that line that don't have the mental or physical ability to be "told" to work.
People are like sheep (sheeple), if one of the volunteers took a bag and started picking up trash it might catch on.
Another thought is if someone asked this volunteer what he/she was doing and he/she said "anybody that helps keep this place picked up, is gonna get some home made cookies" or something along that line.
Hey it could work.

Bob, I like your idea!
Call me naive, but I've talked with some of these people. They've been told that they can enjoy a nice meal at the Kitchen, no questions asked. All I suggested was that, when you show up to eat grab a bag and pick up some trash. Believe it or not, there's not much, and, in a few minutes, the place could look like the Headquarters of Company D, 2nd Battalion, 1st Training Brigade at Ft. Polk, La. You know the drill: "if it moves, pick it up, if it doesn't, paint it."
Put me in charge and I'll have 'em picking up butts and marching in close-order drill to the chow line.
Too much to ask? Not for a plate of Grandma's peanut butter cookies!

If it was just rhetorical I read it wrong. It sounded like one of El G's biblical quotes, and too many people confuse the Bible with actual law. Reading it as in El G or his ilk led me to reading it as railing against those that would help others. I apologize for putting it is the wrong context. I think Ron L is the worst mayor if this city that I've known. I worked with him years ago and never believed he was up to any significant job. I believe he has proven me right. As for Bill W, I go volunteer down there with my driniking club Go suggest it to Brother Ron. He is a nice guy, I am sure he'll listen with a fair ear. And bring cookies for those that want to pick up the butts. Put your cookies where your mouth is!

Brother Ron is a nice guy! Pictureman, some of those lucky people at the Kitchen also get to spend the night at 727 E 11th Street. Does that sound fun to you as well? Drive by there about 5 some afternoon and see them all having so much fun.

I actually drive by the Kitchen every afternoon about 5:05 and see dozens of people milling about stepping over paper cups, empty water bottles, and other assorted bits of garbage that we probably pay city workers to pick up.
Doesn't particularly sound like fun (I don't recall suggesting that it might be), but probably preferable to spending the night at 601 Walnut Street.
