History Center to Present Third Sesquicentennial Lecture

Chattanooga, TN--- --- The Chattanooga History Center and the Friends of the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park, in cooperation with the historic Sheraton Read House, will present the 3rd lecture in a special series commemorating the Civil War Sesquicentennial. The program will be Bridge Burners, and the speakers will be the History Center’s Executive Director and Historian, Dr. Daryl Black, and the Park’s Chief Historian, Jim Ogden. The lecture will be at 7:00pm, Thursday, November 3rd, in the Hamilton Room at the Sheraton Read House. The fee of $10 per person ($8 for members of the History Center and Friends of the Park) includes refreshments, and there will be a cash bar. Pre-registration is required by Monday, October 31st. In July 1861, East Tennessee Unionist, William B. Carter, met with Generals William T. Sherman and George Henry Thomas. The three discussed a plan in which Carter would organize guerillas to burn the bridges in Chattanooga in preparation for a Union invasion of East
Tennessee. The plan gained support from President Abraham Lincoln and Tennessee’s congressional delegation. Join us on November 3rd to hear how events unfolded.

(From an email) Parker’s Crossroads Hosts Second Civil War Exhibit For Immediate Release from the Tennessee Secretary of State: October 11, 2011 Parker’s Crossroads, a small community located along Interstate 40 halfway between Nashville and Memphis, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Civil War history buffs. For the second time this year, the Parker’s Crossroads visitors’ center is hosting a traveling Civil War exhibit on loan from the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA). The exhibit focuses on 1861, the year the Civil War began. To commemorate the Civil War’s 150th anniversary, TSLA plans to prepare exhibits chronicling each year of the war. The 1861 exhibit, which is free to the public, highlights the impact of slavery on the country, the fallout from the divisive election of 1860, the start of the Southern secession movement and Tennessee’s gradual shift toward becoming a Confederate state. That year’s major military actions are also highlighted, including the shelling of Fort Sumter, the Battle of Bull Run and the implementation of the Union blockade. Steve McDaniel, deputy speaker for the state House of Representatives and a history enthusiast, had the idea to bring the exhibits to Parker’s Crossroads, ... Civil War History Tour on Double Decker Bus - Coming Up in Early November For Immediate Release - Thursday, October 13, 2011

Chattanooga, TN--- The Chattanooga History Center is partnering with Chattanooga Double Decker Touring Company to offer a special opportunity, Double Decker Bus Tour: The Battle of Chattanooga, a very different and fun way to learn about local Civil War history. The Battle of Chattanooga was critical to the outcome of the war, and many important battle sites are in, or can be referenced from, the downtown area. Dr. Daryl Black, the History Center’s Executive Director and Historian, will serve as guide. The tour will be at 10:00am – 1:00pm on Saturday, November 5th, and the fee of $35 per person includes snacks. Preregistration is required by November 2nd. Call 423-265-3247, extension 10.
