BERKE TO DISCUSS NEW LAW PRESERVING MILITARY MEDALS Requirement gives veterans, families chance to recover keepsakes CHATTANOOGA – State Senator Andy Berke will hold an event Thursday, Oct. 27 in East Ridge to raise awareness of a new law that preserves military medals for return to veterans and their families. Berke will discuss the passage of Senate Bill 572, which requires the state treasurer’s office to hold any abandoned military medal as unclaimed property until the owner or the proper beneficiaries can be identified for the return of the medal. Previously, military medals left unclaimed in bank safe deposit boxes were sold at auction and the proceeds were sent to the treasurer’s office to hold until the rightful owners could be found. “Veterans’ medals are timeless treasures that should never be sold or auctioned,” Berke said. “This bill ensures that they are given the respect they deserve and are returned to their rightful owners.” The event will take place at American Legion Post 95, 3329 Ringgold Rd, at 2 p.m. ET. Treasurer David Lillard and Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder will also be on hand to discuss their departments’ roles in implementing the new law. “This new law is important because you can’t put a price tag on the value these medals hold for veterans and their families,” Lillard said. “The Treasury Department is pleased to keep these medals safe until the rightful owners can be located.” For more information, call (615) 741-6682.
