Hello Everyone,
I have heard of this place but never been. Down in Bessemer ( a suburb of Birmingham) there is an 83 year old man named Henry Gipson, "Gip". For the last 50 years or so he has run a juke joint in his back yard called "Gip's Place" it is his hobby and passion. He gets high caliber blues bands from around the Southeast, charges people $10 and lets you bring your own beverages as he does not have an adult beverage license. They said that years ago when white people started showing up the neighbors thought they were FBI agents. But they soon figured out that white people like the blues as well.
Anyway, why I am going this Saturday night, November 12th, is Troy Crisswell, the artist that does our flyers and t-shirts, is going to be the opening act. Troy is a long time musician who found out about this place and has put him a band together to go play down there. I have never heard Troy sing, but I sure like his art work, I don't know how good is band will be, but I sure like his art work, I think we will all have a good time, and yes I sure do like his art work.
I am also looking forward to meeting Gip, imagine someone with a passion so strong they will allow people to come listen to music in their back yard, I bet it is a really cool, well behaved crowd.
Troy's band is called BAM BAM & the DUM DUM MAN and they start at 6:30 and play till 8:30, there is some touring blues band from Atlanta that plays at 9:00, but I am going to see Troy sing cause I sure do like his art work.
Cost is $10 you can bring a cooler with you and I think they sell food off a grill if you are hungry.
Here are the directions.
To find Gip's Place, take I-20/59 South to Exit 112 in Bessemer. Turn left, under the interstate, which will put you on 18th Street heading south. Go one mile, across the railroad tracks, turning left on Carolina Avenue at the "T" intersection. Go one block and turn right on 19th Street, then go four blocks and turn left on Dartmouth Avenue. Drive 1.2 miles to a right on 33rd Street. Go two blocks and turn left and then immediately right. Go up the hill two blocks to Avenue C. Turn right and drive a couple of hundred feet and you'll see Gip's, a dilapidated shack in the backyard of Henry Gipson's home that sits beside the big curve in the road"
