Obama Move Would Eliminate 8 of 10 Pocketknives June 10, 2009 Summary 'If this were to pass and you cross the state line with one, it's a felony.' The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency is proposing a new definition that could be used to eliminate 8 of 10 legal pocketknives in the United States right now, according to activists who are gearing up to fight the plan. The federal bureaucracy is accepting comments – written only – that must be received by June 21 before its planned changes could become final, but Doug Ritter of KnifeRights.org, said the implications of the decision would be far-reaching, since many state and federal agencies depend on the agency's definitions to determine what is legal in the United States. For a long time, those switchblades that have long stiletto blades that are spring-ejected powerfully from the side or end of the handle have been illegal in the United States, but now a review by the agency of its own approval in 2008 of a particular type of knife for import is raising serious alarms. www.gundigest.com/article/gunrights_061009_obamapocketknives/

I have one of "those" with the "tiny" spring, I was amazed it's legal.
The knife I carry doesn't fold, so I guess I'm ok... *shifty glance*

I'm missing the Obama connection somewhere. Is the Department of Customs micromanaged by the White House?

I'm missing the Obama connection somewhere. Is the Department of Customs micromanaged by the White House? Is it only appropriate to blame a Republican president for everything that happened in his/her administration, but not a Democrat? I think you know that, but I can tell you're in your agitator role today.

U.S. Customs Set to Classify All Folding Knives as Switchblades United States Customs and Border Protection plans to classify assisted-opening knives and all one-hand-opening knives as switchblades, which are banned. On May 21, Customs proposed a revision of what constitutes a switchblade. This new interpretation would consider multi-tools, traditional pocket knives, one-hand openers, and assisted-openers illegal per the U.S. Switchblade Act of 1958. If U.S. Customs succeeds, it could lead to effectively banning all folding knives from interstate commerce. If you're interested in voicing your opposition to the U.S. Customs' plan (19 CFR Part 177) to re-classify assisted openers and all folding knives, you must send a letter by regular mail to arrive at Customs by June 20, 2009 to the following address: 19 CFR Part 177 U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of International Trade, Regulations and Rulings Attention: Intellectual Property and Restricted Merchandise Branch Mint Annex, 799 Ninth St. N.W. Washington, D.C. 20229 For more information on this issue, visit: www.akti.org and www.kniferights.org

Now if only they'd decriminalize switchblades. It's pretty ridiculous to have them illegal. They are no more dangerous and stilettos are a LOT more convenient.
