Gotta brag on my soldier son a bit. He's currently at Fort McClelland for Annual Training as they prep for deployment. Today was his 9mm qualification and he scored 30 out of 30 for Expert! On to the Mark-19 and then 50 cal....

Just spoke with my youngster briefly and learned that he was only 1 of 3 in his unit who qualified Expert with the 9mm. Plus he has achieved Expert Gunner status as he shot perfect with all 4 weapons. Those were his 9mm, the Mark 19, 50 cal and the 249. Maybe once he gets home from the sandbox, he might have a shot at Sniper School! That is one thing he really wants to do.

Love to hear that Honor, kudos and respect to your son. I hope he has a safe tour and I hope he makes sniper school! 30 of 30 is great, please let us know how he progresses. Love to hear how he does with the 50 cal.
On a recent trip to Yuma, AZ I met a retired Marine who had a couple of snipers under his command. All I can say is "wow", the amount of discipline and control is nothing short of amazing.
My boy is on his way to Iraq in two weeks as well.

chiliman, thanks and I hope that your son has a safe tour as well. I don't know what the scores were, but Jeff made perfect scores with all of his weapons, 50 cal included.
I met his team leader when they got back last week and he told me he is glad to have Jeff on his team.

These are the same weapons I used as an 0331 machine gunner in the MC, except we used the 1911 .45 instead of the 9mm.
I was just wondering what was involved in qualifying for the Mk 19(it's a grenade launcher machine gun), 50 cal, and the SAW? I know you have to hit a target, but it can't be like typical target shooting because you're just basically spraying the hell out of something with them.
These guns were my MOS and we just basically went out and shot the hell out of stuff on a regular basis with them. There was no real qualifying. Just wondering what the Army difference was.
Congrats to your son.
/the Mk. 19 is fun as hell. Picture a school bus and seeing the seats flying around in there.

i would think it would involve precise target shooting at certain distances, elevations and weather conditions.

After looking up the Mk 19 I've decided I want one.

My son told me the M249 is one of the weapons he will be carrying over in the sandbox.

We used to say that the SAW stood for Sorry Ass Weapon. They are bad about jamming.
An interesting feature of the Mk. 19 is that the grenades that it uses only arm themselves after spinning a certain amount of times, so there's no danger of a gun malfunction or human error causing an explosion.
