Veto of guns-in-bars bill may not stick(its called the resturaunt carry bill, and its NOT about guns in bars...)Gov. Phil Bredesen vetoed a bill Thursday that would have allowed handgun carry permit holders to take their weapons in bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, sending a message that may prove only symbolic Bredesen delivered the veto before an assembled group of law enforcementofficers, saying that he opposed the bill while supporting Second Amendment rights. "Americans have also understood for more than two centuries that there are sensible rules to be applied to the exercise of those rights," Bredesen said. "I believe this bill crosses that line." The veto is the sixth of Bredesen's tenure. He has never been overridden. Nashville attorney John Harris, executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association, said Bredesen's veto was "futile" in the face of lawmakers' previous support. "It just demonstrates an amazing amount of arrogance for him to think he can veto this," Harris said.

The outcry is overblown. Very liberal in the logic: "Something bad COULD happen, so we're going to makesure we do what's best for you---leave the law-abiding citizens defenseless against the never-follow-the-law-anyway thugs.

The Senate still has to vote, but it looks like the override will carry there as well.
Expect the first lawsuit from someone shot in a bar to happen shortly thereafter... because for as many responsible gun owners are out there (the vast majority) there's enough idiots with a pistol to create chaos.

Unless the person shot is shot by a permit holder I don't see what the lawsuit would have to do with the change in law. But if someone shot me, regardless of where we were at the time of the shooting, I'd probably be suing them.

it is illegal under current law to carry a sidearm in a bar, and when the override goes through, it will still be illegal to carry in a bar. a bar does not serve food, and the ones that do serve food, they certainly do not make 51% of their revenue off food as required by HB0962 to be classified as a restaurant that serves alcohol. TN law defines a restaurant as preparing more than 5 meals a week, with an adequate wait staff to prepare and serve the food. the exception to the 5 meal rule is covered by holidays.
39 other states allow for permit holders to carry in establishments of this type, and in Virginia, one of the most open gun states, you CAN NOT carry concealed in a bar. you must open carry. there has been no "shootout at the OK Corral" in the other 39 states, and as far as i know, there are no signs posted restricting handguns either.

I keep mine out in the truck. That's good enough for me, but I'm fine with this bill.

The problem with keeping it out in your truck is that it is more easily stolen that way. If you keep it with you there is less likelihood of it falling into the wrong hands.

Maybe so, but were dealing with very low odds in all aspects of this.

i never leave my weapon in the car unattended. never. that is just a bad thing. i would be willing to bet that if someone left a gun in the car, and the car got vandalized, i bet the car insurance would not reimburse the cost of the handgun. i may be wrong, but i bet you would be screwed.

It may be a throwaway to you but whoever might take it sure isn't someone I would want to have it.

The chances of my vehicle being broken into and my gun taken are probably less likely than someone noticing that you're carrying and hitting you over the head in the parking lot and taking it.
Just having a gun is not enough. Do you really think you can reach, unholster, cock, and shoot fast enough when a guy comes at you from between a couple of cars in the parking lot at night? He knows you have a gun because he saw it, and wants it. My gun is anonymously hidden in my truck.
My neighbor and I put a pistol range out behind our houses, and we have people over all the time shooting. Everyone always tries to shoot tight groups by propping and taking forever to aim. Every time one of them forgets to chamber a round or doesn't seat the clip all the way, and the gun goes "click", I say "You're dead".
I am not advertising the fact that I have a gun. I can get to it quick enough for me. I've traveled everywhere with a gun since I was teenager and haven't had a problem yet.
Again, I'm fine with concealed carry. I support it. It's just not for me.

I think that if I'm that unaware of my surroundings that I would be in a position that a guy could surprise me by coming at me from between a couple of cars that I probably deserve getting my gun taken from me and used on me.
You are correct in that the odds are very long that this would ever occur to me. There are a couple of reasons for that. I generally don't go to places that are dangerous, I am generally very aware of my surroundings and in the rare cases that I do find myself in need to be somewhere less than safe I do not put myself into a position that I could be easily ambushed.
For the most part my guns stay home. When I do carry a gun with me I carry a gun with me and there is usually a reason for my doing so. That reason is usually that I'm going to the range.
