Find Metro Newspaper Articles for Free in the Tennessee Electronic Library
(Published: December 28, 2011)
Newspapers can be terrific sources of information, but articles aren’t always available online or if they are, there are often fees involved.
However, Tennessee residents can get free access to the electronic versions of the daily newspapers in Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga through the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL). The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal, the (Nashville) Tennessean, the Knoxville News-Sentinel and the Chattanooga Times-Free Press are all available on the TEL web site, www.tntel.info.
The site is updated daily, so people can see each morning’s stories from across the state. Backfiles from the past five years are also online and searchable.
“The Tennessee Electronic Library provides a wealth of information to any Tennessean with Internet access,” Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. “Newspapers are sometimes called the first draft of history and now, thanks to TEL, Tennesseans have these resources available to them."
“It’s a great tool for students to use anywhere they have an Internet connection,” said TEL Coordinator Wendy Cornelisen. “Family historians will also appreciate the inclusion of more recent obituaries.”
TEL also includes regional and national news sources, such as the St Louis Post-Dispatch, the New York Times and USA Today.
TEL is funded by the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee and the U. S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. TEL is administered by the Tennessee State Library and Archives, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
