Back in the early 90's, I had an inquiry about a person of note from the War that could have possibly been related to me, so I thought "what the hell" and called Memphis information and asked for the number of Shelby Foote. To my surprise, there was a published number. I called it up and HE answered to phone!

I asked him about the person I was interested in, and he went on and on about him. We talked for about 15 minutes. I'll never forget him for that. What a gracious, and down to earth man he was.
