Patten Parkway soon may boast an eye-catching entrance, continuous storefronts and extended grand promenade if civic planners find a receptive ear for their redesign of the historic boulevard. The plan unveiled Thursday at the nearby Bessie Smith Cultural Center extends the memorial parkway east almost to Houston Street with shopping, dining and residential mixed-use buildings rising up around it. The Volunteer Garage would lose a few spaces to storefronts on both Patten Parkway and M.L. King Boulevard. But a new “sustainable” parking garage on the east side of the development would more than make up the difference. Condos constructed from cargo containers would rise northward along the steeply graded site, which would culminate in a pedestrian square that designers say could make a natural music venue. More than likely the HP would not fit into the plan.
But the cargo container condos is a new one. I wonder if they would be movable or rearrangeable?
every six months to a year they reshuffle the stack to give tenets a different view.

I don't see why it wouldn't. They've done a lot of nice things with the place, and it's not like they can move the building.

Cargo containers, called CONEXes, could make great condos. Surrounded by walls of sandbags they could also make excellent cover as the lead starts flying when the "churches" let out.

Where is the freaking parking? You can't park there now, and half of the area is parking places. Remove those, and there will be NOWHERE to park.

After looking at that photo, I was scrolling down to make basically the same comment. [grin] OK so they plant a bunch of trees, taking up a bunch of parking places. So where do the customers park?? Not close? perhaps thats why so many bars have closed in that area??

They are building a parking garage other side of Lindsey street. Must be Republic's contribution to the plan. Like they need another freaking parking property to monopolize.

There needs to be about 5-10 more parking garages in the downtown/north shore areas.

I'll personally be handling the exorcism rite and sanctifying of the ground with kosher salt at the site of the Paty/Rymer Law Office.
