It's most common in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry around here, but is used in a lot of the gaited horse industries. Caustic material or chains or other painful contraptions are used to force the horse front legs into an exaggerated walk.

Some basics

The practice generally leaves the horse lame after a very short show life. It's VERY common for "big lick" walking horse classes.

Soring is a process of intentionally causing pain to a horse's front legs and hoofs to enhance a gaited horse's gait for the show ring. It considered to be quite inhumane to the horse and is illegal in the United States.
