let me mention some updates at the CAC: Autism Resource Room: Thanks to Celeste Lipps for taking on the development and design of this room. It’ll have shelves of autism-related books and materials, a computer, some space for kids to draw and play, and hopefully can be used for a variety of things you all need. If you’d like to help shelve books and do some more organizing with Celeste, contact her at fclipps@gmail.com. She can let you know when she comes in and various tasks ----- Online Silent Auction, Fall festival: These are two things our fundraiser committee has in the works. If you can think of some big ticket items you’d like to see donated so you can bid on them cheap tell us and we’ll make some calls to those businesses. OR, if you want to contribute items to the auction, contact Cynthia Joyner at cynjoyner@gmail.com or call 423-356-8091. Fall Festival is an event we’re trying to have for all our families and advocates. Something fun and for us to get together and socialize. Let us know if you’re interested in volunteering. Date will likely be in October (maybe 20 or 21st). ----- CAC delivering Behavioral Therapy: Alyce Benson and Dr. Karen Weigle are now seeing clients at the CAC. Because the CAC doesn't yet have any grant funding, and we have rent other bills to pay, we have to pre-approve insurance for each new client to make sure costs are covered. Please know that we are working incredibly hard right now writing grants for an ‘ACCESS’ program that allows us to see everyone, regardless of if their insurance covers the costs. Our fundraising committee is also working hard to develop regular and growing events as another way to generate funds to support access for all. For more info, call the CAC at 423-260-1115. ----- Another donation! Much thanks to Jennifer Bain and her family who donated $1000 to the CAC!! Even though we’ve gotten so many items donated for our start up, we still have some expensive items and costs to get us up and running. We have some furniture needs, computer needs, training equipment and testing material needs, and we have plans in the works to build an ADA bathroom that’s within our suite (so we can have better access AND use it for potty-training workshops). That, plus it takes many months before insurance reimbursements come in the door, so we have to scrape by in the meantime. We are grateful for all who contribute to the CAC. ------ Special Olympics Horseshow When: Training begins September 4th, call now to register. This year, we want to double or triple our participation. We'll provide you with registration paperwork in a future email but here's the gist. ANY child can participate. No martial arts training required. Kids spend a few weeks asking neighbors, friends, relatives to sponsor their number of kicks (for example,if a sponsor does $.05 per kick, 100 kicks raises $5, 200 kicks raises $10 and so on). During the event, the kids are given 5 minutes to produce as many kicks as possible while volunteers hold a target and count. Various prizes are given to participants who raise the most in donations (more kicks leads to more donations) and a prize goes to the person with the most kicks. Everyone leaves with goodies. This event was VERY successful and well loved by those who attended. You won't want to miss it. ----- RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS WANTED: Transitioning to Adulthood with Autism Participant Criteria: Youth with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum who are in their last year of high school or planning to leave high school within the next 12 months. What happens during the transition to adulthood for youth with autism spectrum disorders? Leaving high school is a time of great change for all youth, but especially for youth with ASD. This research study will examine the changes that happen for youth with ASD during this time as well as the factors associated with a positive transition. We will be looking at stress response, behaviors, services, and the family environment. Participation involves: Psychological testing of youth with autism (first visit only) Collecting samples of the son or daughter’s saliva for 4 days (4 times each day) to measure cortisol (a stress hormone) Interviews and questionnaires for parents Youth may be asked to complete a public speaking task (second visit only) Compensation $20 for each visit and a report of the evaluation Visit Requirements: 3 visits over 2 years

Breakthrough Corporation Inc. - JOB DESCRIPTION Title: Day Program Director Program: Direct Supports/ Administrative Date Revised: August 2012 JOB SUMMARY - The Day Program Director (DPD) is charged with oversight of Breakthrough's Day Program for adults with autism spectrum disorders which has as its mission to improve the lives of adults with autism, helping them to be active and valued participants in their community. The DPD is responsible for: program development, implementation, and monitoring; staff training; and other administrative functions under the guidance and supervision of the Executive Director. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. General Responsibilities 1. Develops, prepares and/or monitors individual support plans for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. 2. Develops and implements autism specific programming to meet the needs of people in Breakthrough’s care. 3. Develops and oversees implementation of visual supports and communication supports including assistive technology. 4. Coordinates and arranges appointments, meetings and other administrative matters on behalf of service recipients and staff. 5. Assists in a supportive role for the service recipient and their family and works with independent support coordination agencies or state case managers on the behalf of service recipients. 6. Assists in interviewing prospective service recipients and their families. 7. Provides crisis response as needed. 8. Hires, supervises and evaluates the performance of both front line supervisory staff and direct support staff. 9. Develops staffing plans and oversees staff scheduling 10. Assists with specialized training of staff members. 11. Develops community connections working to expand the program and develop new services/supports. 12. Works with the Executive Director in promoting community acceptance and support through participation in community activities or liaison efforts with other agencies or entities. 13. Abides by all policies, procedures, regulations and guidelines for safety, quality assurance and general corporate oversight. 14. Assists in the performance of other duties required by the needs of service recipients and as assigned by the Executive Director. B. Physical Demands Must have good physical and mental health and be able to work in a fast-paced work environment. Must be able to deal with stress and adjust to a flexible work schedule. Some travel is required. Must be able to implement physical restraint procedures. C. Special Demands The DPD must: have understanding, patience and tact in dealing with service recipients, their families or advocates and other agencies involved in providing supports for service recipients; the ability to maintain good working relationships with staff and with contacts from other agencies or entities; be able to prioritize work tasks under the general direction of the Executive Director; and be able to work without close personal supervision.
D. Qualifications Master’s degree in special education, education, social work, recreation therapy, occupational therapy, behavior analysis, psychology, counseling, speech language pathology, or a closely related field; will accept an equivalent amount of education and work experience in lieu of an advanced degree. Other requirements include at least two years of both supervisory experience and experience working with individuals with autism and/or developmental disabilities. E. Job Knowledge The DPD must possess a clear understanding of administrative and programmatic guidelines, needs a working knowledge of Medicaid guidelines and State of Tennessee, Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities policies and procedures. The DPD should have a working knowledge of the support needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders as well as the skills and training necessary to implement, oversee and troubleshoot structured interventions to meet these needs. The DPD will be expected to seek out and attend continuing education opportunities as approved and required by the Executive Director. G. Employment Variables Evening and weekend work may be required to meet the needs of the individual service recipients; will be in constant contact with service recipients, their families and other support agencies. Some travel required. Must be able to be on-call on a regular basis and respond to emergencies in a timely manner. Cannot have secondary employment unless approved by the Executive Director and permission for secondary employment may be rescinded at any time

VSA Tennessee has recently started several new programs that I am hoping that you can share with the individuals that you reach. Also, I have a question for all of you.
Dulcimer Choir Several years ago, VSA Tennessee formed a Dulcimer Choir that is housed at the Blair School of Music. We are making some upgrades and adjustments to this program. This is a performing group and we would like to get a core group of 7 strong players and we currently have 3. The Artistic Director of this program, Sarah Musgrave, and I would welcome the opportunity to speak to any of your groups at a meeting or setting to explain more about this program. Or if you prefer, we can arrange a teleconference. Our plan is to get the information into your hands in September, host an evening for interested families in October at Blair, have the potential performers go through an assessment with the artistic director in November and begin them in the program in January.
Can you please tell me the best way to get information to you and to your families? Is there an opportunity where we can come and speak to your group or a group that you feel would be interested? Would you prefer a teleconference?
This program is for young people with Autism from the ages of 13 and up.
HANDPRINTS This is a new visual arts club for young people under the age of 25 with any disability. We have some exciting programs lined up. Even if an individual is no a member, he/she can still participate. I have attached information on this program and would appreciate it if you could pass along the word. We have a couple of very unique opportunities coming up in October.
Movement Connection This is a new dance program primarily for young people over the age of 13 with Down syndrome, but we will also accept young people with Autism. The program will begin October 2nd and run every Tuesday evening from 6:30-7:30pm at the Dayani Studio on Vanderbilt's Campus. This group is going to be a performing dance company. Information on it is also attached.
Your advice and feedback is requested in regards to the Dulcimer Choir. I would appreciate your assistance in spreading the word on HANDPRINTS and the Movement Connection.

Free Public Speaking Workshop at ETTAC The East Tennessee Technology Access Center is hosting a free public speaking workshop Thursday, September 13th from 4:00 to 5:30 at ETTAC’s Knoxville office, 116 Childress Street. Donn King, an associate professor of speech at Pellissippi State Technical Community College who works with people to increase their level of speaking skills, will be conducting the workshop. His emphasis will be on developing skills to boost careers and improving personal storytelling to influence others. The workshop is open to people with and without disabilities. When her daughter Jeanne was born with Down syndrome, Mollie was determined to provide her with a Catholic education. She helped to establish the Hand in Hand program for children with cognitive disabilities at Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville. Mollie was a strong advocate for the Down syndrome community, and her support greatly benefited DSAMT. In honor of Mollie’s legacy, DSAMT created the Mollie Gavigan Service Award to recognize outstanding service to the Down syndrome community. Meetings provide opportunities for education, socialization and creativity in a fun and safe environment. Activities often include arts and crafts, service projects, yoga, Tae Kwon Do, and more. If you decide to participate … We will schedule two appointments for your child at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, one before treatment begins and one in a few months after treatment finishes. We will provide your child with therapy sessions twice a week for 6 months. We provide the therapy at your child’s school during the school year or at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center over the summer months. Your child can continue all other therapies. There is not cost for the intervention or assessments. Families receive $50 for completing the study. Children in this study will receive 6 months of individualized communication intervention provided by an experienced KidTalk interventionist. Study Criteria: Child must have a diagnosis of Down syndrome Child must be between the ages of 18 and 42 months when starting the study Child must have the ability to imitate actions using their body Child must have between 1 and 5 productive words or signs Children must live within 30 miles of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. Exclusion criteria include: Children who have significant hearing/vision impairments as reported in medical records provided by caregiver. Families whose primary language is not English due to intervention materials only being available in English. We will ask you to: Complete child assessments, observations at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, and at home before intervention begins Participate in parent training for 48-60 sessions at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center and your home Come for periodic follow-ups for up to 12 months after the intervention ends Assessments are administered at no cost as part of the eligibility determination process. Transitioning to Adulthood with Autism
Participant Criteria Youth with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum who are in their last year of high school or planning to leave high school within the next 12 months. What happens during the transition to adulthood for youth with autism spectrum disorders? Leaving high school is a time of great change for all youth, but especially for youth with ASD. This research study will examine the changes that happen for youth with ASD during this time as well as the factors associated with a positive transition. We will be looking at stress response, behaviors, services, and the family environment.
Each visit will involve: Psychological testing of youth with autism (first visit only) Collecting samples of the son or daughter’s saliva for 4 days (4 times each day) to measure cortisol (a stress hormone) Interviews and questionnaires for parents Youth may be asked to complete a public speaking task (second visit only) Compensation: $20 for each visit and a report of the evaluation Visit Requirements: 3 visits over 2 years

Researchers looking for new and innovative ways to help those with autism adapt to the demands of employment used the Apple iPod Touch as an assistive device with three adults with the developmental disorder. The results of the small case study — published this week in the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation — were quite promising, they said. For “Jeffrey,” 21, who struggled with transitioning from one task to the next as a custodian at Hardee’s, a series of alarms on the iPod helped keep him on schedule. The notes function of the device was also used to provide a checklist of responsibilities and remind him of calming techniques. After just one week, Jeffrey was adept at using the iPod independently, researchers said, and no longer needed constant prompting from his job coach. He also stopped displaying behaviors like spinning, humming and stomping. A year later, researchers say that Jeffrey is still successfully using his iPod and is considered a reliable employee. “This is an exciting time for anyone in the fields of education, physical rehabilitation, and vocational support, where we are seeing a long-awaited merging of consumer products and assistive technologies for all,” said Tony Gentry of Virginia Commonwealth University who led the research. For the study, each person with autism was assigned a job coach and an occupational therapist who programmed their iPod to meet the specific employee’s needs. Researchers focused on the iPod Touch because it was the most suitable pocket-sized device on the market when the study was designed. The names of the participants were changed for the purposes of the report in order to protect their privacy. In the case of “Grace,” a 60-year-old with autism, mild cerebral palsy and epilepsy, introducing the iPod Touch allowed her to independently and safely navigate her way to and from work. Before she had her iPod, Grace would often step into the street to look for the bus if it was late. Now, specially-programmed reminders and an instructional video prompt her to call the transportation company instead. Grace was also helped by having music at the ready to calm herself while she waits for her ride, the study said. The third person to try the iPod Touch was “Lily,” a 20-year-old with autism and Down syndrome who isunable to read or tell time. Before receiving the iPod, she often became frustrated at her housekeeping job at a Virginia hospital when prompted by her job coach and was known to throw things, stomp, cry or call her mother. Lily’s iPod was programmed with a series of apps to provide verbal alerts to prompt her throughout the day and customized picture books to help her cope with various scenarios she might encounter. Another app was also used to track her progress toward earning rewards for good behavior. By using the device, Lily soon needed her job coach to spend significantly less time with her, researchers said. The participants are part of a larger four-year randomized trial. Though it’s not possible to draw firm conclusions from the case study since it involved such a small sample, researchers say that given the promising results so far, they are hopeful that they’ll soon be able to assess how beneficial iPods and similar devices are for workers with autism.

Any child can participate. No martial arts training required. Kids spend a few weeks asking neighbors, friends, relatives to sponsor their number of kicks (for example,if a sponsor does $.05 per kick, 100 kicks raises $5, 200 kicks raises $10 and so on). During the event, the kids are given 5 minutes to produce as many kicks as possible while volunteers hold a target and count. Various prizes are given to participants who raise the most in donations (more kicks leads to more donations) and a prize goes to the person with the most kicks. Everyone leaves with goodies.
