Police officers kill gunman at Sullivan Central By Rain Smith Approximately a year after training at Sullivan Central for just such a scenario — and even within the same area of the high school — deputies shot and killed a gunman on Monday morning. The suspect allegedly packed two loaded guns, pointed one at the principal's head and ignited a standoff with the school resource officer. He was eventually shot near an entrance to the school library — where several frightened students were huddled together in an emergency lockdown — after repeatedly asking where a fire alarm was located. Thomas Richard Cowan, 62, last known address of 2060 Mountain View Road, Kingsport, was transported to the hospital by helicopter. Authorities say he died at about 10:10 a.m. Read more: times news

Eric Watsom, why all the fuss...anyone can do that as lomg as they have a gun...non story i disagree w/ watson's bill, but you are totally misrepresenting it. under his bill, certain teachers would receive high level handgun and crisis management training. they wouldn't just let any teacher w/ a gun carry in school. also, if that home economics teacher is a former police officer, perhaps he/she could've done the same thing as the officers in this case. i would rather have more SRO's or uniformed private security officers myself... preferably former cops. students are more afraid of them.

“students are more afraid of them.” That is a sad thing. Some of those cops are actually *people*, so I’ve heard.

Everyone wants that. No one wants to pay for it, though. Myself included. Especially considering it will cost us tax payers nadda to arm staff after the cost of training.

I'm willing to pay for it. Cut the free bus rides to school use that money, cut the free lunch program feed your own damn kids use that money. How many 8 year old girls faces need to be blown off before we can stop saying we can't afford to protect children. That's bullshit.

Sir, In my considered opinion you are a hapless dumba**.
In other words, you are willing to pay for it as long as your taxes don't go up. That's bullshit!

Following that reasoning, pay for your own damn kids' protection and stay out of my pocket then. It will cost tax payers $5 million dollars+ a year to put SROs in Hamilton County schools. State wide that sum would be $102,000,000 (for all 1,700 public schools in TN). How do you propose that we pay for that?

Children, children. There will be no significant new gun control laws due to SCOUS ruling, the power of the NRA and the will of a significant minority. BUT, the USofA has the highest per capita rate of fire-arm homicides of the industrial 1st world (which includes Switzerland where there is a higher per capita gun ownership). So what we have here is a CULTURAL phenomenon. A small portion of it is mental health related, at least in terms of individuals who are out of touch w reality. However, if one uses diagnostic criteria, one could legitimately conclude that a majority of killers are character (or personality) disordered, a disorder that is almost exclusively environmental in origin. So, again, it is quite apparently a matter of our culture, not the guns.
