Berke Is Elected Mayor; Hakeem Has 6 More Votes Than Murphy; Henderson Wins District 1, Mitchell Takes District 2, McGary Loses To Freeman, Anderson Topples Rico, Smith Beats Ladd, Benson In Runoff With Grohn Tuesday, March 05, 2013 Former state Senator Andy Berke was elected mayor of Chattanooga in Tuesday's elections, and there will be a number of new faces on the City Council. At least five newcomers will be sworn into office along with Mr. Berke in early April, and Jack Benson has to win a runoff to keep his District 4 seat. Attorney Berke finished far ahead of Guy Satterfield and Chester Heathington. Former City Councilman Yusuf Hakeem had six more votes than incumbent Peter Murphy in District 9. He actually did not get over 50 percent of the vote since there were seven write-in votes. Councilman Murphy said that means there will be a runoff. Former County School Board Chairman Chip Henderson was the victor in District 1 to replace Deborah Scott. His closest competitor was former school administrator Tom McCullough. We'll see.

Mayor Littlefield is a member of "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" and a signer of their coalition principles. This organization claims to be for protecting the rights of individuals to legally own guns while working hard to eliminate illegal guns from the streets of their cities. That's all well and good but when you read their Coalition Principles there is a troubling bullet point in there: Whereas: 30,000 Americans across the country are killed every year as a result of gun violence, destroying families and communities in big cities and small towns; and
Whereas: As Mayors, we are duty-bound to do everything in our power to protect our residents, especially our children, from harm and there is no greater threat to public safety than the threat of illegal guns;
Now, therefore, we resolve to work together to find innovative new ways to advance the following principles:
+ Punish - to the maximum extent of the law - criminals who possess, use, and traffic in illegal guns.
+ Target and hold accountable irresponsible gun dealers who break the law by knowingly selling guns to straw purchasers.
+ Oppose all federal efforts to restrict cities' right to access, use, and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement, or to interfere with the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to combat illegal gun trafficking.
+ Keep lethal, military-style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines off our streets.
+ Work to develop and use technologies that aid in the detection and tracing of illegal guns.
+ Support all local state and federal legislation that targets illegal guns; coordinate legislative, enforcement, and litigation strategies; and share information and best practices.
+ Invite other cities to join us in this new national effort. Now that Mayor Littlefield is on the way out will Mayor Andy Berke sign the coalition principles document stating he is against the ownership of military-style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines?

I'm thinking that it's gonna be Status quo, or in Red State lingo, "Same Sh*t, Different Day" and in Sovereign Citizen/White Supremacist movement code, "191944."
Being the eternal optimist and non-cynic, sensitive, passive type person that I am, I continue to hope for real 'change.'
