Color me very impressed. Diamond Billiards has hired a whole new kitchen staff and changed their menu. And the fare is definitely not what you'd expect for a bar/pool hall.
I've eaten there three times this week. Monday night I had what has got to be the absolute best club sandwich I have ever eaten in my life. Folks, they have a smoker out back and they smoke their own hams and turkeys. This club sandwich was made from real meat -- not lunch meat or even deli meat. I'm talking slabs of ham and turkey like you'd make it yourself with leftovers from the family Thanksgiving dinner. And on thick grilled slices of Texas toast.
Tuesday night I had the soup and salad combo with their "Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich". As Thorne can testify, when I make a grilled cheese sandwich, I use 2 or 3 different kinds of cheese. Diamond Billiards does it the same way with slices of American, Swiss, and Provalone. Their soups are all made from scratch. The soup that night was a fabulous chicken and sausage gumbo.
I spoke with one of the cooks who happened to be a former co-worker of mine from years back. He says not only are the soups made from scratch, they even make their own beef and chicken stocks from scratch. They make the au jus for their French Dip sandwich (which, by the way is made with slices of slow-roasted prime rib -- I will be trying this soon) from their home made beef stock.
Today, for a late lunch, I enjoyed a ham sandwich (I may never be able to eat a sandwich made with lunch meat ever again) and the soup of the day today was baked French Onion soup (yeah the kind with cheese melted all over the top of it).
They may not have much for atmosphere -- it's loud and can be a bit smokey when they're busy. The service is about average for a bar. But they do have Guinness in the bottle and some really great food at a reasonable price.
