We received several E-mails suggesting Modern Dave’s Cafe & Smokehouse, so we recently took a drive out to 4117 Cummings Highway in Lookout Valley. This is a small, “nothing fancy” building, but they are giving it a bit of ambiance with very nice tablecloths and napkins. The name is a bit confusing – on the building it has Dave’s Modern Café – on the big sign it has Modern Dave’s. There is a smoker in back where they prepare everything shown under the “Hickory Pit” section of the menu.
We went for dinner and found the menu to be quite intriguing. Appetizers included items such as a smoked chicken quesadilla ($5.95), shrimp and blue crab quesadilla ($7.95), sauteed crabcake ($7.95), and spinach and cheese ravioli ($6.95). Wayne and I both chose a cup of Cream of Crab Soup ($3.50), which was delicious. It was rich and creamy, with a small mound of crab in the center as a garnish. We both agreed we would order it again.
Prior to the soup being served, our server brought us a small basket of bread with butter. The bread was nothing special, just bread. I would suggest it either be warmed or the butter softened because the butter was so hard we had difficulty spreading it on the bread.
The Hickory Pit menu gives you a choice of two sides: grilled jalapenos (something I don’t recall seeing on any other menu), potato salad, baked beans, potato of the day, or slaw. Entree pit items are ribs ($10.95/half rack; $18.50/full rack), pulled chicken ($10.95), pulled pork ($9.95), sliced beef brisket ($10.95), a combo plate of ribs, chicken and smoked sausage ($13.50), and jambalaya $13.95).
