CHATTANOOGA - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to eat raw oysters harvested from West Karako Bay, a section of Growing Area 3 in Louisiana. The FDA said seven people became ill after eating raw oysters at a Chattanooga restaurant on Dec. 13. The FDA did not name the restaurant. The agency said these oysters, harvested from Dec. 3 through Dec. 21, may be contaminated with norovirus. Symptoms of norovirus infection include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping. Affected individuals often experience low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and a general sense of tiredness. Most people show symptoms within 48 hours of exposure to the virus, with the illness lasting one to two days. However, the illness can become serious for the very young, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_119319.asp

Sorry, but I gotta argue... There have been stomach illnesses from ANY kind of food imaginable, since the first time man ate food. Yes, raw foods carry a slightly higher risk - but - mostly when not stored/prepared properly. I've been eating seafood (including raw oysters) since I was old enough to feed myself, and have NEVER become ill from it. I have, however, become ill from eating in restaurants with poor sanitation practices, from food not stored properly (food left out @ picnics), and (once) because of a dare Raw oysters are the aphrodisiac of the gods! Throw in some ice cold beer & cocktail sauce (with LOTS of horseradish!), and we gots a party! Hmmmm - sounds like the makings of a spring cookout!!! Billy

"raw oysters are the aphrodisiac of the gods!"
Gods who don't appreciate a good cut of steak cooked just perfect with an excellent wine.

Why in the hell didn't they name the restaurant?

They didn't name the restaurant because the only thing the restaurant was to blame for was trusting their supplier. Naming the restaurant would have served no purpose but to give them a black eye. The contamination came from the supply end.

I love me some raw oysters with just a squeeze of lemon juice washed down by a crisp white wine or a good beer. I also loved a dish Mrs. Bear used to make "chicken gizzards and hearts pot pie". We no longer indulge in such (sigh) but damn it was good stuff.
