Wine comes out of a bottle.
The liquid in "wine" boxes is merely an approximation of a wine-like fluid.
Repectfully,

You haven't been keeping up with the current wine information. The wine in boxes, once opened, is better sealed. Corks tend to have some air leakage.

For white wines boxes are an ideal packaging medium and the idea is akin to the original packaging used of wines, wineskins. Oxidation is an enemy to both white and red wines but especially to white wines. With red wines a certain amount of oxidation enhances the taste and bouquet of the wine but not with whites. Boxed wines reduce the amount of air coming in contact with the wine to just about zero even after many glasses of wine have been poured.

I suppose they make more sense economically for mass consumption. C'est tres gauche.

It makes great sense for occasional consumption. My wife will have one glass of Riesling with a meal and that leaves the rest of the bottle for me to consume. I don't consume the rest of the bottle so we have half a bottle of wine that will set around and go bad before we want wine with our meal again. Buying the wine by the box we can drink a glass every couple of days without worry of the rest of the box oxidizing before we get to it again.
If we were mass consumers the bottle would be emptied at each meal or at least by the next day. These boxes make great sense economically for the occasional wine drinker.
The wines available in boxes are not bad wines either. No, I probably wouldn't pick these wines for special dinners but then there is usually more than just me and my wife when these occasions arise and when it is just me and my wife the occasion usually leads to most of the wine in the bottle being consumed anyway. For family meals where one glass of wine each will be consumed they are ideal.

Yes, up until 2004 white wines outsold reds in the US and white wine is still very popular here. Even Americans, who of all nations have been bombarded most vigorously with the "red wine is good for you" message, have remained remarkably faithful to white wine. It was not until 2004 that red wine sales very slightly overtook those of white and even today just over four bottles out of every 10 sold in the United States contain red wine. (The White Zinfandel phenomenon still accounts for nearly two bottles in every 10.)* The reason that red wines began selling so well in the US is that reds were linked to heart health. Prior to that Chardonney was king here.

I'm an equal opportunity drinker -- red, white, it's all ok.
That being said, I have yet to find a box wine that tastes good. I've tried numerous times. Justin, if they could put a decent wine in a box I'd be all over it.

If you are an occaisional but frequent bottled wine drinker, it is worth the money to invest in a wine pump, it removes the air from bottled wines and slows oxidation.

Red wine contains tanin (sp) which gives some people headaches.

I've gotten to the point as to where I can't drink red wines at all and that's all I used to drink.
I can't stand whites, so now I just do Long Island Ice Teas and be done with it! ;^)

I have an issue with drinking wine out of a box... perhaps it's mental (no comments please). True it makes sense due to cost saving.... still. Just something about it seems just wrong.

agrees with Red and Samara....or maybe I just haven't found one I liked the taste of. I prefer Cabernet Sauvignon and Chianti in case any one has any box suggestions.
I am not a white wine person as I tend to like dry wines. Sometimes in the summer I will crave a Zinfandel

Guess I'd rather enjoy at least one or two glasses than not enjoy three or four.
Weird I know.

If I had my choice and could afford it, I would drink this wine my parents buy up north when they are traveling called Treleaven. I love their Chardonnay. They always buy a case when they are up in that area. www.treleavenwines.com/I occasionally can sneak a bottle home after visiting or house sitting when they are away. It's GOOD stuff!!

When Marvell and I go to Ashville, we go to the Biltmore Estate and the winery. They have some very good wine. Almost as good as the boxed wine!

There are many dry white wines. Check out Sauvignon Blancs or Fume Blancs in particular, many have alcohol levels well above 13% which means virtually all the sugars have been turned into alcohol. It's not the tannins in red wine that gives you the headaches, it's the histamines.
