Sgt. Newman led Metro's first cop motorcycle squad
By BOBBY BASS
Nashville at 200 In March 1965 the Metropolitan Police Department formed a motorcycle-equipped traffic enforcement squad. The squad was led by Sgt. Kerry Newman and was appropriately called "Newman's Raiders." I was one of the 10 motorcycle officers chosen to work with Newman. We were on duty Tuesday through Saturday, from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. At that time, most accidents involving injury and/or fatalities were happening on Dickerson Road and Gallatin Road. Newman informed us that we would be working Dickerson Road on Friday and Gallatin Road on Saturday. So, on Friday at 6 p.m. we would ride in formation from the police station on the square, cross the Jefferson Street bridge and head out North First Street.
