Do those things have the same rules as automobiles? I hate to see them taking up an entire parking space.

Put them in your trunk.

How much of a parking space should one take? and what's the difference between a one-rider scooter taking a parking place and a one-driver (no passengers) Hummer taking one parking place?

Most of the time, I create my own parking space.

Why not let them park on the sidewalk?
I almost smashed one the other day because I didn't see it in before I pulled in. It was between two SUV types.
Don't get me wrong, I think they are a fine idea for buzzing around town. More power to them. Same goes for bicycles. I'm in the process of moving downtown and the first thing I'm taking is my bicycle.
Are they the same class of vehicle as, say, a big Harley?

I'm fairly sure 150 cc's and up are all considered the same class. I don't think you have to have the "M" on your drivers license for anything under 150.

I don't give a shit how much milk you can pour in the tank or the headers.
If they are on the ROAD...there are RULES.
(One of my first DUI prosecutions, ironically, was on a man on a 3.5 HP go-cart.)

And that is why you'll see many bikes parked 'far' from the curb, toward the 'street' - so people are more likely to see them before pulling in. I have seen auto drivers go ahead and park in a spot when a bike was in the back of the spot, so to speak. I have even seen people move bikes so they could pull in. They were spoken to. It was my bike. Dolts.

I can't imagine moving someone else's property out of the way like that. I say let you guys park on the sidewalks, same as bicycles. We're seriously considering getting a pair.

Do those things have the same rules as automobiles? For the most part - yes. But they do get to go on through a red light after stopping for a reasonable period of time and the road is clear. The reason being is that quite often the trip switch will never activate to trip the light for them. That change in state law was passed a couple of years ago. Parking - if they put their money in the meter, they bought the whole space.
