A high stakes poker game bust led to a police involved shooting Thursday night. "We've heard $30,000 to $100,000 exchanges hands throughout a night," said Chattanooga Police Chief Bobby Dodd. Police say 32-year-old Clifford Billups provided food for the high stakes poker game. Certainly. At least one bozo who thinks pointing guns at police officers is just fine has been removed from the streets. And a slew of people who feel entitled & above the law have been shown that they are neither. Seems like a win-win to me.

And a slew of people who feel entitled & above the law have been shown that they are neither. Seems like a win-win to me. Granted. But how many gang shootings have there been this year? How many shootings have business owners committed this year? Lastly, how much gambling can one do at a Kangaroo or at a church? See the problem? Two months and countless dollars wasted all in the name of "handing out citations". Y'all have a tough job and I'm certainly not critiquing that... but someone, somewhere, obviously has some priorities mixed up for putting a poker game between business men (mostly) at the top of the to do list. |

Well, welcome to Chattanooga, where you are guilty until proven innocent by the people's court, which these folks talking trash need to cast the first stone since they are perfect, but first you must be plastered all over the local news for all to see what kind of piece of s**t you really are and you must loose your job, house, cars and your family and not until all this happens will Chattanoogans be happy. Wait, or until the next story comes out. Hey let's get on facebook and bad mouth some more hard working people!! My question is what are these folks that are beating Chattanoogans up doing for a job since they have all this time to be on the internet during the day.

There's nothing illegal about being a "professional gambler" as long as you register with the federal Government as such, and declare any income derived from these activities for taxation.
There IS a law against organized gambling in Tennessee whose elements include: chance, consideration, and prize, all of which elements the activity in question satisfied.
Advice: If you want to run poker games, do it at HOME.
If Mr. Billups has a canny barrister, he could wind up owning an office park; think about it: invited to a business property to participate in inherently illegal and manifestly dangerous activity with inadequate supervision and control. Any insurance the owners had instantly invalidated.
Hell, I'LL represent him!

Chattanooga has had 28 shootings year to date and there raiding a poker game. Littlefield must call the shots at the PD as well, sounds like on of his dumbass decisions. Watch out nooga playing cards will be moved out of your cespool next.

Officer Fired 3 Times At Poker Game Caterer Who Pointed A Gun At Him
Friday, April 13, 2012 Police said an officer fired three shots at a man who was apparently catering a high-stakes poker game after the man pointed a gun at him. The shooting incident happened just after police announced their presence at 9:50 p.m. at 1618 Gunbarrel Rd, Suite 103, ATC Healthcare. After officers made entry into the building, 32-year-old Clifford Billups ran out of the back door. Investigator John Patterson was covering the rear door when Billups came out. What's wrong with arresting people who are breaking the law against illegal gambling? Some of the posts imply that the gang problems we have negate enforcement of other laws -- I don't follow the "logic."

1.) Anyone who points a firearm at LE in expectation of a positive outcome (for him) needs to be removed from civilized company.
2.) When I see that LE has raided a gang meeting place after several months of investigation I will applaud loudly. So far I only know that the gang problem is bad enough that the Strut must be cancelled, hopefully now that this nest of insidous gamblers has been eliminated money and manpower can be directed towards removing a physical menace to the citizenery rather than a moral menace.
3.) While there is no doubt that the gentlemen cited/arrested were breaking a law, does this conduct really deserve the expenditure of money and manpower it required?

When have I ever criticized cops? This thread or any other? I am criticizing whatever numbskull that put a poker game ahead of violent gang crime. If that was your decision, THEN I would call you out for not having any common sense. Until you declare such, keep up the good work. Yes, I support even you, Tsav, the ass that trolls this board.  "but minimizes the presences of CHILD RAPING, VIOLENT, TWIN-GUN-TOTING CRIMINALS" Correct me if I'm wrong, but the gun carrier was there to cater the poker game. He would have pointed a gun at officers regardless of being there or somewhere else. Everyone attending the poker game were doctors, lawyers and business owners with absolutely no criminal record. They were all given citations ($10 fine? ). Course, doctors, lawyers and business owners playing poker is dangerous business. These low-life sacks of shit are the reason I carry a gun anytime I go downtown. Never know when one of these older, upper-middle class people will pull a King out of his pocket and rob you! |

Seriously, now!  You're comparing aging adult professionals playing poker with their own money with theft. And this has nothing, repeat NOTHING, to do with class or race. This has everything to do with spending two, repeat TWO months, unknown man power and unknown tax dollars to hand out a few $10 citations.... whilst there were 10 gang shootings on Christmas and 28 gang shootings since that. Again, I have not now, nor ever, criticized cops for doing their jobs. I am only criticizing the one who put a measly poker game at top priority, whom ever that may be. Here in Tennessee “the bible belt” it always amazes me when people rise up against gambling in the same fashion they do about prostitution, bootleg liquor and sundry other evils of society. Yet seven days a week you can walk into any local stop and rob store and purchase your lottery ticket in hopes of striking it rich. I suppose the difference is that the money goes to the school systems or students? Really, what is the deference? Gambling is gambling.
High stakes poker or the Saturday night boy’s poker night with a $10 buy in it’s all the same. Grown adults using their money however they see fit. I wonder on any given night in our local area how many “high stakes” or low end poker games are going on? Does anyone really care? I know I don’t.
The reasons for keeping gambling out of Tennessee have been stated but really amount to a lot of bull. The gambling money is taking money away from families and food out of children’s mouths. Oh and the lottery isn’t? People are bringing guns to poker games and or there is a threat of a robbery with the potential of people being hurt. That being said, I wonder if anyone has ever been robbed of a lottery ticket? Or has a store ever been robbed because they sell a high volume of lottery tickets and have cash on hand?
My solution to the “gambling problem” is this. Give Moccasin Bend to the Cherokees, legalize gambling in Tennessee and build the largest casino in the South here in Chattanooga. You want jobs for the “young gangsters” well there you go. You want a boost to the local economy, well there you go. You want tourism in the area, there you go. And on top of the boost to the economy the security level at casinos would take guns out of the hands of the gamblers and it would even be safe.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too folks. Either gambling is wrong and not allowed in Tennessee or it’s not. Which is it?
Having said this let me be clear on a few things. The law is the law and has to be enforced regardless of one’s opinion of it. Could the Chattanooga Police Department have used those same resources to fight other crimes? Sure they could but apparently a crime was reported and investigated culminating in the arrest of those involved. The police did their job. Now I do not agree with the statement that gamblers are scum. Maybe rephrased to say that illegal gamblers are scum would pass the smell test but anyone who buys a lottery ticket is a gambler and thus painted into the same scum category.
Fact is that the gambling laws do suck and need to be changed but until they are changed the law is the law and will be enforced.

Different divisions & personnel within the CPD have different duties & responsibilities. Not everyone works on gang and other major crimes cases.

They broke the law; they deserved to be busted.
A moron resisted with a weapon; he's lucky he didn't get smoked. He can go cater Bubba. Two pieces to a catering gig? Gimme a break; I never brought more then my working knives.
There are more serious issues then gambling, but laws must be enforced on white upper middle class MF's and lower SES black/white/green thugs.
Politics often dictates directives.
Legal orders are to be followed.
There is NO indication of questionable action much less wrong-doing on the part of LE; they were doing the job we (under)pay them to do.
STFU! Vote and elected officials whose priorities suit you better. Support LE doing their job. Get involved in the community (i.e., become a, gasp, community organizer) to educate and change things and instill the notion of living and teaching personal responsibility. Stop vilifying those with whom you disagree.
