Okay ... I'm in a hurry, and cannot locate the thread where folks were discussing tipping at restaurants, so ... I'm starting a new one!
Tonight met Red and a few other gals at Big River out at Hamilton Place ... as it was a large group, the restaurant automatically added 18% gratuity to each individual bill.
Okay ... I can live with that.
Well, when the receipts came back to be signed (for those who used plastic), just above the signature line was one that stated "Additional Tip" (or some term to that effect, anyway).
When my neighbour at the table exclaimed over this to others of us (I had paid cash, and therefore had no such difficulty), I told her I would take care of her answer for her, calmly took the receipt and pen from her hands, and proceeded to write "WTF??" on that line. She decided to make a hasty exit, before the server returned. Something about needing to return home to her children.

Okay ... I found it ... *blush* ... it was a 'threadjack' of my own 'Jetstream' thread.
Ah well ... now it can be an official subject all its own. LOL

I don't think that the additional tip was a "must". But, if your server gave your table top notch service, wouldn't you tip more than 18%? I would - therefore, that's where the additional tip would come into play.
My take on the matter anyway.

I generally tip 20% to 25% based on service. Having once lived off of tips, I tend to be more generous. Plus, it's easier to figure 20% in your head than 18%.

At least 20%.I usually write something like "Great service" or "Thanks!". Why write something ugly on the tab..especially some one else's? The wait person didn't print the tab...they are the messager.

I generally tip well, unless obviously slighted by the waiter/ress.

I wonder what the extra tip for credit card was though? was it a processing your credit card fee, or a receipt paper fee? sounds weird. I personally don't think the tip should be added automatically in any restaurant anyway. I don't mind if it lists what a 15%, 20%, 25% tip should be. That can be helpful if the bill is not a normal total for me (I just double what 10% would be for example if my bill is 20 it would be 2+2=4 so 4 dollars. I use to double the Tennessee tax but, that got confusing when I was in a different state and it would equal out to about 18%
Personally I wish we would pay servers a wage and not have to worry about an extra tip anyway. Or at least not 20%. It's not our fault they don't get paid what they should. Or at least let us right it off on our taxes. I mean 20% is alot of money to me.

In some countries, tipping is an insult. It connotes "You don't do your BEST unless bribed."

It wasn't just for the credit card. A cash receipt just prints the total due and the customer paying cash leaves a tip. Because the 18% had already been added to the bill, the credit card customer was given the opportunity (for lack of a better word) to leave an additional tip. The cash customers could do the same but it just wasn't printed on their bill because they paid cash.

That's my normal tip range, also, however, I really do appreciate exceptional service and will tip more. Recently we dined at O'Charleys and the poor gal was working her first day and they were shorthanded. Service was not exceptional, but the effort was. That night I left a tip greater than the bill. I don't hesitate doing that one bit when I feel it's deserved.

If any restaurant places a mandatory tip on my bill, that's the MOST the waiter will receive regardless of the quality of service....

Okay, in an attempt to keep threadjacking to a minimum I'm replying here: I understand what you are saying about the rate, but if you look at it from a budget percentage it really doesn't work. Unless of course you want to pay a WHOLE lot more for your food. Most restaurants try and run under a 25% labor cost...some huge chains like chilis actually squeek out with 15% ish at busy times. that is with paying the waitstaff $2.19 hourly. Figure a 30% food cost, rent, utilities, restaurant supplies (ie: togo supplies, china, linen, paper goods, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, dish detergent etc:) insurance, advertising, comps (for all of the cold meals that don't get paid for, theft, security, repair and maintenance...bottom line for a restaurant is typically under 10% gross...so double the waitstaff rate of pay and what happens to the bottom line...Well it means the top line has to increase..so either way you are going to pay..tip or pay $20 more for the steak? Caterer, then maybe the route to go would be to put them on commission. Increase the cost of the menu by 18% and give this to the wait staff based on the items they serve. This would certainly encourage selling up and comps for cold meals would mean no commission on those items which would further encourage getting the meals to the customer while they are still hot. Note on the menu that the wait staff is paid on commission but tips for outstanding service are still appreciated.

Caterer, obviously you are in the business, and I'm not, but I can't understand how raising wait staff pay the equivalent of their tip income, and applying that amount to the cost of the meal, costs you as a business owner anything. You collect the money and pass it on in pay. Yes, your labor percentage is different, but you are using a different business model so you would expect that.

And I assure you your message on the reciept amused her greatly... If I recall the grat on that ticket was a dollar and some change..the 'additional tip' line was giving you the chance to leave your server more than a dollar something should you deem her service more valuable than that... Your server (the cute blonde) is my coworker, roommate and a friend, that being said , if your service was bad you should have notified a manager. I was not there and cannot speak for her and won't attempt to except to say her service is usually stellar but if you have a bad experience in any place of buisness you are doing the buisness (and it's other employees) a disservice by not speaking up.

I'd disagree. You'd be doing them a favor if you did, but it is the management's responsibility to make sure their servers are doing a good job, not the customer's.

I don't know who your cute blonde friend served, but it wasn't me or my neighbour at the table on whose receipt I penned my message. My bill was actually close to $40, so I know for a fact that the gratuity I was charged was more than a dollar and some change. And I would be doing YOU a disservice if I didn't advise you that you should make certain of your facts before passing judgment on someone and/or their actions ~ especially when you do so in a public forum.

Trust me ... there is a difference between a 'cute blonde' (that I assume was a female) and a mediocre-in-appearance (and in service) brunette male, and I am not blind.
