Well, as some of you may already know, today was the day for my "snip snip" surgery. As in, no more chances to little Poole offspring running around. Surgery went very well. The doc is a leading Urologist who was recruited by Erlanger for this cutting-edge (pun intended) procedures that involve, well, no scalpels incisions. It's as nearly non-invasive as possible, and was originally developed in the past five years in China. It as done quickly and relatively pain free, and amazingly enough there is (so far) no swelling at all. Though I do have a couple of bags of frozen peas just in case. The more interesting news is that they gave me a prescription for Oxycodone for the pain. I haven't taken one yet, because frankly, these types of painkillers make me a bit nervous, having heard so many horror stories about their abuse. Right now, I'm stlll nicely mellowed out from the Valium I took pre-op, but I'm going to play it by ear. I'll be out of work - on the couch in fact - for a couple of days, but I have a laptop so I'll be able to keep up with 'net stuff when not stoned out of my mind.

I know someone who wishes it had been virtually pain free but it wasn't for him... Some people just refuse to follow doctor's orders! Glad it went well and take it easy!

The worst part for me was when I had to take back a "sample" a couple of weeks later so they could make sure there were no swimmers in there. Everyone in the waiting room just knew why my wife couldn't speak.

Spastic - it's oxycodone, not oxycontin.

When the doctor says to stay on the sofa, he means it! Trust me.

Oxycodone is different than Oxycontin-Oxycodone is the active ingredient in Percocet, which is a good narcotic for moderate post-op pain. Oxycontin is a long-acting (as in 12 hour slow release) version of the same drug, the "abuse potential" for Oxycontin comes when people crush the tabs and release all the medication at once...
Most men would say that any surgery involving that body region causes AT LEAST "moderate postop pain" so take the things!

So where do the little swimmers come in?

One thing about Oxycodone - it's a slower acting pain med, but when it kicked in, I was out like a zombie all afternoon and evening. Sleep is the best curative anyway, so that's a good thing.
Better news is that, so far, there has been no swelling.

I'm sure there's some disappointment there, as well.

with all the whiners the docs probably had to deal with before prescribing a day off and oxy, they probably figured it was easier to put the crybabies out for a day or two.
(I still remember an ex boyfriend of mine insisting, and yes I told him he was full of shit, that a tubal ligation was less painful than a vasectomy. Lets see, an outpatient surgery with a little soreness and possible swelling, back to normal in three days verses invasive abdominal surgery that requires a week of bedrest and a month minimum before normal activity can resume, 6 weeks before it's possible to get into athletics.... riiiiiiight.)

I had to take Oxycodone for nearly four years, you can imagine how strong the doses were after that long, and I never had any problems out of them. Take away, and as long as you don't snort them, you'll be fine!

I was just thinking - this may be a good example of what is to come with new healthcare plans. Now he gets Oxycodone but soon he may have gotten instructions for Advil & an icepack. It is sufficient and a LOT cheaper, but someone is going to have fits when they don't get the heavier drugs (just because).

I dunno,if mine was swollen to twice the size,I'd be showing it off everywhere I went, pain or not

Just a suggestion, have your wife pick up some frozen peas (bagged), if you begin to experience any swelling a bag or two of those will adjust to ease your discomfort.

MAybe I'm just lucky, or maybe I have a really good surgeon, but I have had no swelling at all. No need for ice packs or frozen peas (even though I bought two bags, just in case), and the Oxycodone helped me through the first couple of days. Now I'm just taking Ibuprofen.
