Three chances to hang out with your Folk School friends this weekend:
Chance #1: Friday evening at the 3 Sisters Bluegrass Festival down on the waterfront. We'll be there with the Folk School booth, so stop by and say hello! Chance #2: Saturday, all day, 3 Sisters, see above. Chance #3: Meet us for a special brunch at the Market Street Tavern on Sunday between 11am and 2pm. Alvaro Victoria makes an incredible meal there on Sundays, and it's a nice spot to make a little music together. Bring your instrument and enjoy a stuffed poblano and some Sunday jams.

Hello Everyone, Well we are down to the wire with getting ready. Even if you are just coming for the day this weekend you need to get there early. The official music starts at 1:33 when Dread Clampitt plays on the water at the pond stage. However at 8:30 am Harbert will lead a nature and adventure hike for the kids and the kids at heart. This will wind down along a creek through some big timber. Sort of off the beatin trail. He will get back by 10:00 am so as not to miss Yoga with Christina. I have now seen this done a couple of times and it looks to me like a slow motion work out. Bring your mat if you have one. The yoga class open to old timers and people who have never done it. It is free and might be something you want to try. Of course as always we encourage you to bring lots of cash. We will have a row of vendors selling some pretty cool stuff. Food will be available as well, so if you don't want to fool with cooking Kenneth will be glad to provide your dinner for you. They will be open for business on Friday so even if you are coming to camp you don't have to fool with cooking. People already have camp sites set up. Help us out by calling a friend or two and telling them about what is going on. Email me with questions steve@theacousticcafe.com steve masterson

Chickstock - Saturday Oct. 29 Students and instructors from the Folk School of Chattanooga will open the show at Greenway Farm on Gann Store Road this Saturday! This is a wonderful fall music festival that supports the North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy, so bring your picnic blankets, the kids, the dog, and your instrument. If you want to join us on stage for the Folk School's set, meet us by the side of the stage at 12:30. We'll play whatever you know! We'll rock out some Shady Grove, Red Haired Boy, Groundhog-- you just let us know which tune is your favorite, and we'll all play it together. Originally, we had planned a Christmas Ensemble for our Fall schedule of classes, but unfortunately, we didn't have enough people sign up for it. So instead, a few of us are casually getting together on Thursdays at 6pm to play Christmas tunes in preparation for a few community performances coming up this December. So if you'd like to participate with your instrument and/or your voice, you're welcome to join us this Thursday at the Folk School. At our practice this Thursday, we'll talk about another great opportunity that has just come up for sharing music this upcoming holiday season. We are disappointed to have to tell everyone that due to unexpected circumstances, Bruce Greene and Don Pedi are canceling their visit to Chattanooga this Saturday. We are issuing refunds to those of you who purchased advance tickets, and we look forward to another opportunity down the road to bring these two wonderful musicians to share their music with us.
In the meantime, we still have this incredible weekend of fiddle/violin teachers training coming up, and it's not too late to register!

Bluegrass CD swings for the fences in Dalton The Miracle League of Whitfield County is hoping for an early Christmas with less than 20% of the remaining funding needed to reach their goal of $350,000. The funds when raised will go towards completing the intitial construction of The Miracle Field, a specialized baseball park serving children and adults with special needs in North Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Supporters are hoping that the needed resources become available in order to begin playing baseball in the Spring. Completion of the field in 2012 would also provide a possible facilty to support the 2012 Special Olympics Georgia games to be held again in Dalton. Need a Christmas gift idea that will last beyond the season? Last September, Bluegrass Bands and Helping Hands released a benefit CD to help raise public awareness for the Miracle Field project. The CD Bluegrass Bands Helping Hands Volume 3: "Big Leagues"is a fantastic collection of 16 donated tracks featuring traditional bluegrass, gospel bluegrass, and contemporary bluegrass and beyond. If you want something fun to do Saturday night there is a restaurant in Springville (not too far from Birmingham) called Local Color. No I have never been but I have heard great things about them. The food being real good and reasonably priced. At 6:30 pm they have a trio that performs; I think it is three women and a piano. Then this Saturday night at 8:00 pm the main act is the Herb Trotman Band. They have a cover charge of $10. I am sure on this world wide web thing you can find out a phone number or email address for them to see if you need to make a reservation. Come out for good food and Bluegrass in a special atmosphere. Have you checked out our web site latley www.theacousticcafe.com we are almost finished putting the Spring line up in place. Reply to me at steve@theacousticcafe.com Please help us to spread the word. steve masterson

It's here! It's one of our favorite days of the year, when the Southside neighborhoods come together to throw the biggest, longest, most exciting and diverse festivals in our city. And once again, the Folk School will be there in full force! Here is your complete schedule of MAINx24 events, all 98 or so of 'em, and most of them free for the whole family to enjoy. r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=86udl9cab&et=1108898321738&s=707&e=001b0pm8SWOg8RVJhF9DWNs31z5Pcqqc6jYwbAGbvt_Oof3I0LGuJW7zLavJWehcSuqasqjhRjpo2Xgci0ffRMjBx5Q8ZVckSmdIeimgga3tXswbRIujeZDpI87vOaJcQ74Zc-LvM1uPXA= --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MAINx24 Busking Competition - Dec 3rd - 12 to 2pm Big big thanks to the sponsors of this year's MAINx24 Busking Competition!! Miller & Martin PLLC have made it possible for the Folk School to organize this event and be part of the Southside's biggest celebration yet! Busking is the practice of performing in public places for tips and gratuities. Busking performances can be just about anything that people find entertaining. Buskers may do acrobatics, animal tricks, balloon twisting, card tricks, clowning, comedy, contortions & escapes, dance, fire eating, fortune-telling, juggling, magic, mime, living statue, musical performance, puppeteering, snake charming, storytelling or recite poetry or prose as a bard, street art, street theatre, sword swallowing, or even present a flea circus. Who are the best street performers? YOU decide! Cast your vote at the Folk School of Chattanooga booth at the corner of Main and Rossville Ave. Performers! Registration takes place at the Folk School booth between 11:30am and noon, and performance spots along Main St. will be assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis. Perform from 12pm to 2pm, and whoever gets the most votes during that time will win! $300 grand prize for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music and Cash Bar at Green|Spaces this Saturday At 2pm when the Busking Competition ends, we'll quickly count up all the votes and announce the winner at Green|Spaces, where an all-day music showcase will take place. The first place winner of the Busking Competition will perform at Green|Spaces at 2:30. Check out the whole schedule of performances at Green|Spaces. We have invited a friend from the old time music community, Rayna Gellert, to perform at Green|Spaces on Saturday evening at 6pm. She tells us her current musical project is a big departure from the old time music we've enjoyed from her time with Uncle Earl and and a solo fiddler, so it should be very exciting to see what she's up to now. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who likes pancakes? Calling all musicians and people who like a good breakfast! The Folk School is providing the musical entertainment for this Saturday's MAINx24 Pancake Breakfast, the official kickoff of the 24-hour festival on Main St. It starts at 8:30am and ends around 11am when the parade gets going (and then after the parade we'll enjoy the Busking Competition, etc.). Bring your instrument to Fire Station #1 on Saturday morning and join us in a few songs or tunes. It's a totally fun, no pressure, family friendly, neighborly kind of gig, and like the rest of MAINx24, it's "anything goes," so feel free to join us and help yourself to a big plate of pancakes too! Questions? Get in touch!! 423-827-8906 Ask for Matt or Christie music@chattanoogafolk.com
