Chattanooga Police Chief Freeman Cooper announced that his and Sheriff Long’s staff met today to discuss the SRO situation for the 2007-08 school year.
Since all of the schools belong to Hamilton County, the City of Chattanooga has not trained or certified School Resource Officers for many years. For the past few years Chattanooga Police Officers have been assigned to some schools to provide a safe and secure environment for students and administrators.
At this time, however, the Chattanooga Police Department is operating with a shortage of nearly 30 officers. To provide an officer to any school would only increase this shortage in the uniform patrol operation.
The Sheriff has some SRO’s trained and is in the process of hiring and training some additional SRO’s. Both administrations will meet again next week to develop a strategy for city officers to work temporary in some schools, to give the County an opportunity get their SRO program operational.
